This is an adorable little book written by Emily Carr herself (and one of her dogs). Written in 25 vignettes, she also has one of her dogs tell what happens in each month of the year. Energetic, adorable, poetic, I found it fascinating to hear about Carr’s life in her own words. She really loved her dogs. The artwork is also full of life and action. She loved the Indigenous community around her but a small warning – she uses terminology that we don’t use today (Submitted by Sharleen)This is an adorable little book written by Emily Carr herself (and one of her dogs). The texts are dry but witty, often uses ironic tones to create sad yet absurdly humorous representation of Kafka. And the art also delivers the entertaining irony through the exaggerated portrayals; for example, Franz' father Hermann is drawn as a gigantic, oppressive figure who towers over Franz(who is often depicted like a sorrowful stickman). The mixture of art and text is what makes this title an exemplary comic biography. The text portions of the book are mostly minimalistic and insightful, and the art adds the richness to these barebone yet sharp texts. It is an appropriate style to portray the surrealism and absurdity of Kafka's works while narrating his life. The book carries a somber atmosphere throughout and hilarious commentaries are delivered in deadpan voice, making the reader pity and laugh at Kafka at the same time. This is recommended book for Kafka fans and anyone who enjoys unique comic art form (Submitted by Eric)The texts are dry but witty, often uses ironic tones to create sad yet absurdly humorous representation of Kafka. Megs’ eight-year-old brother, George, is dying. Born with a heart that is too weak to do the job right, he is unable to attend school and spends much of his time in bed. After reading “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis, George tasks Megs with a question. Knowing that she attends University that is next door to the University where Lewis teaches, George asks Megs to ask Lewis where Narnia came from. After she works up the courage to talk to Lewis, Megs is a bit baffled when instead of answering George’s question, Lewis (Jack) and Warnie his brother tell her more stories: about their lives growing up, the loss of their mother, and the comparative horrors of boarding school and war. As Megs writes out what she remembers of the stories to take home to George, she learns to embrace how story reveals truth. The author does an incredible job of creating her characters. Beautifully written, my only qualm is that the author doesn’t delve deeper into who Aslan is, and how belief and faith in Jesus can change lives (Submitted by Sharleen)Megs’ eight-year-old brother, George, is dying. The front cover is the first thing that entices. 3 children on an ice floe with a polar bear, badger, ostrich and various large packing cases and suitcases. Looking closer you spot a glass eye and a wooden leg. I must read this story! I thought. And I’m so very glad I did. Archer Helmsley is born a dreamer. He has very good reason to be a dreamer, with two grandparents who are famous explorers and he lives in a house filled with strange instruments and numerous stuffed animals. But his mother is not interested in dreaming or any of his tendenancies and only allows him to go to school. He is a prisoner in his own house. Every year, packages arrive addressed to him, and he manages to smuggle them into his bedroom without his mother knowing. A glass eye and a jade elephant are only two of the fascinating items. Archer makes friends with Oliver while at school, and discovers he lives next door to him, and that they can meet on the roofs of their houses. Then the horrible news that his grandparents were lost on an iceberg in the Antarctica arrives in the local newspaper “The Doldrums Press”. Archer despearately needs to find his grandparents and take up the mantle of his last name, to be a Helmsley in action, not just in name. Adelaide, who is new to the town and has moved in to the house across the way, provides the impetus to launch Archer and his friends out of the stagnation of their normal lives. Witty, beautifully illustrated, quiet, brave and illuminating, this story remains in the heart after reading. The first in a series (Submitted by Sharleen)The front cover is the first thing that entices. 3 children on an ice floe with a polar bear, badger, ostrich and various large packing cases and suitcases. As a F1 fan, this is my first book on F1 and it is some of the best sport journalism ever written! 21 chapters, it breaks down to 21 years, from 2004 in which an energy drink company started building a party team as others on the paddock thought, to 2023 that Red Bull showed total dominance on the track. If you like true- life mysteries, this is the one for you. An epic research journey into the life of an Indian princess – inspired by a portrait in a museum in Mumbai in 2007. The author thought the caption on the portrait told a sad story – Indian princess sells her jewels in Paris to aid the Jews in escaping the Germans and gets arrested, and dies in an internment camp. However, these words turn out to be false. The author travels to India, Paris, USA to learn about Amrit Kaur’s life and where did those jewels go? Into a world of Maharajas, kingdoms, political losses that evolve into emotional, financial, and class losses. Questions arise on Amrit’s life decisions, were they for love, for family, for women’s rights, or? Read on to discover about life in India’s elite families pre 1947 and current day (Submitted by Jamie)If you like true- life mysteries, this is the one for you. A mysterious and chilling choose-your-own-adventure type graphic novel. This book will have you flipping pages through many winding hallways and doors within a seemingly empty building in which you, Wade, have been hired to fix a computer, in order to leave. Each door reveals anything from a simple empty room to something more strange and ominous. A lot of liminal spaces and 'back rooms' type of unsettling horror. I highly recommend having a pen and paper handy to keep track of where you're going and where you've been to help Wade leave the building! Serilda loves to tell stories. Her stories are fantastical and outrageous and loved by the children around her. But the spinning wheel markings around her irises mean that she is shunned and feared in her community. One night, during the Snow Moon, when the Erlking and his hunt are riding through her community, Serilda finds herself intervening to save the lives of those people he is hunting, leading to a face-to-face conversation with the evil Erlking himself. Forced into a situation where a story about herself to cover the fact she hid his prey leads to an impossible task, Serilda accepts the help of an unlikely stranger.
