Cleeves deepens our knowledge of Perez and Rhona Laing and adds Willow Reeves to the sustaining cast of characters. The number of people keeping secrets made the mystery difficult to untangle, so the identity of the murderer was unexpected, but logical, which is what kept me turning the pages, although Jimmy Perez was a rather depressing character in this book. He's still recovering from having his fiancée killed by a psychopath, so that's realistic, but his actions, although explainable, make everyone around him off balance, not knowing what to expect from him--and he's not enlightening them, either. I'm looking forward to the next book, though, since I've become involved with the characters and the paths through the clues and the solutions to the mysteries are always absorbing.
