CNN has viewers; Fox News has fans. That's the gist of Gabriel Sherman's book, which documents the rise of the conservative news channel and its ruthless president, Roger Ailes. While there are many anecdotes in this book that Fox hoped would never see the light of day, overall it was an enjoyable read. What I found most interesting was the chapter dealing with Fox's struggle to get on Time Warner Cable in the mid-90s, highlighting the white hot feud between moguls Rupert Murdoch and Ted Turner. Also, Ailes's attempt to take over a small-town newspaper and the Bill O'Reilly sex scandal demonstrate just how vicious the cable news industry can be. Whether you love or hate Fox News, this book does a good job at tracing back all the major turning points that made the network #1.
