Once again Inspector Colbeck and Sgt. Leeming are faced with a railroad related puzzle. A young woman and her maid board a train to Oxford to visit relatives and they apparently do not reach their destination. Colbeck surmises that, perhaps, disguises were used, especially after meeting the young lady's fiancée, who would not be any young woman's romantic dream of a husband to be. A ransom note arrives and the plot thickens. Victor Leeming is once again subjected to train and horseback rides, which, as a city dweller, are not his element. The kidnappers cleverly evade capture more than once. If only Superintendent Tallis and the missing young woman's family would just listen to Robert Colbeck, this case could be wrapped up much faster; but that wouldn't be any fun, would it?
