Tracy Chevalier has turned fossils, a subject which normally bores me, into an engaging historical novel. Who would have thought that a book which also touches on creationism and extinct species could be exciting? Chevalier is a masterful storyteller because she takes these normally dull subjects and creates an intriguing tale of attitudes in the early 1800s. The community of collectors (the more educated and well-to-do) vs. the fossil hunters (the poor who sell these items to put food on their table.) The book inspired me to look up some of the sea creatures found in the fossils and I was surprised to find that Mary Anning was a real person, as were most of the characters in the book. This was my first Tracy Chevalier novel, and I have read two others since. This is my favorite so far.
