From the often Caldecott-buzzed Deborah Freedman, a sweet and funny story about finding your place in the world. Carl is an earthworm. He spends his days happily tunneling in the soil until a field mouse asks him a simple question that stops him short: "Why?" Carl's quest takes him on an adventure to meet all the animals of the forest, each of whom seems to know exactly what they were put on this earth to do, unlike the curious Carl. But it's not until the world around him has changed that Carl begins to realize everyone, no matter how small, makes a big difference just by being themselves.

Great watercolor illustrations along with a story that will have kids asking "Why?" a lot and can lead to some good discussion on ecosystems.

A nice story about an earthworm named Carl who spends his days digging, tunneling, and turning dirt into soil until one day when a mouse asks him "Why?" and Carl doesn't know why. He goes on a hunt for answers to the meaning of life, asking various animals in the forest. Through his journey, Carl realizes that all creatures, even the smallest ones like himself, have an important job and make a huge difference by just being themselves.

THIS BOOK IS FANTASTIC! The watercolors are so skillfully done and Carl's search for meaning is heartfelt. A wonderful addition to anyone teaching their children about decay or the life cycle of earthworms. I loved it!

What a wonderful tale! Beautifully illustrated and informative - an intriguing way to share the value of a worm's contribution to our environment. Ages 3-6
