How long would you stand by? What do you do when your best friend is bullied? What do you do if he is a bully? Bystanders Katie and Devan see things very differently, but one thing is clear: Grade 9 life is hard. Told through the voices of Katie and Devan, and (the target) Will?s poignant poems, Egghead shows how bullying affects everyone ?and that there is more than one side to every story.

Out of the many books I’ve read about bullying and abuse in school settings, I’ve found “Egghead” to be as exceptionally lifelike as fiction novels can be when it comes to resembling real life through descriptive words and realistic subplots. Not only did Caroline Pignat explore the various perspectives of the roles played in the typical bullying cycle, but she also looked into the way the people that play those roles think, behave, and react to bullying in general. This heartwarming, eye-opening, and touching book reminded me, as a reader and a student, to restrict quick conclusions and biases about others as I simply do not know what it’s like to walk a mile in their shoes. In this case, Shane, the grade 9 bully who picks on the main character, Will, was struggling with family issues at home, with his mother’s abusive boyfriend being a tormentor himself. Will was socially awkward in public as his mother died when he was young and he doesn’t get much attention from his workaholic father. Overall, “Egghead” was an emotion-filled book and I would absolutely recommend this novel to mature students of all ages as it has an incredibly impactful life lesson, making it worthwhile the read. Rating: 4.5/5 stars.

Will Reid who is Egghead only has one friend her name is Katie, a girl he knew since elementry school.

He is constantly bullied and teased everyday by Shane who is the leader of the bully, Brad who is equally sinister and Devan who goes along with the crown even if he knows that it's wrong.

This book is about a boy named William James Reid aka Egghead. He is a smart, curious student who is often picked on by a bully named Shane and two of Shane's friends. Katie is Will's best friend. The story is written in 3 points of view Will, Katie and one of Shane's friends named Devon. The story is a truly realistic story of what can happen when bullying occurs.
