The Yamadas is very different from the usual Ghibli fair, but that does not automatically mean it is worse. Though there is a very distinctive style, a lot of the complexity is missing. You don't have to be complex to be good (and the Yamadas IS good), but lack of complexity does limit the overall impact and awe to be had.

'My Neighbors, the Yamadas' is a universally funny animation film that follows the daily life of the Yamada family. It uses a simple comic strip style whose quality of drawings is stunning and makes the characters look lively and real. The film does not have one overall plot but is a series of vignettes with charming characters that are quite idiosyncratic yet tolerant of each other's eccentricities and occasional disagreements; and stand firmly united as a family. This delightfully inventive film presents a slice of life with some of its wisdom and simple pleasures that will bring a smile to your face.

With a child’s sense of perseverance, little Nonoko regards her extended family with a mixture of delight and bewilderment. There’s dad who always seems to put his foot in it, mom who enjoys a daily crisis, big brother who is constantly disappointed by his ordinariness, and dour grandma who doesn’t seem to have a kind word for anyone except when it really counts. But the crazy Yamada household is infused with love and small kindnesses as they weather (quite literally at times) the unpredictable sea of life. Using primitive yet colourful animation techniques this earlier offering from Studio Ghibli is presented as a series of vignettes, some whimsical and fantastic others more grounded, meant to convey the giddy uncertainties inherent in simply living. The result is akin to reading a stack of Sunday comics which, when it works, elicits a smile as the Yamada’s chaotic adventures remind us of our own familial idiosyncrasies. However, it tends to drag on a bit too long with a few scenes crossing the line into “precious” territory aimed squarely at the kindergarten crowd. Not Ghibli’s best production for sure, but its happy-go-lucky optimism hints at greater things to come.

This film is a bit different from the other Ghibli flicks. The style of animation makes it look like a minimalist comic strip, which isn't bad. The stoy chronicles the events that happen to a family living in japan. These events are things that pretty much every family goes through. It's humorous, and the characters are easy to relate to.

Extremely funny!

I really enjoyed it, but maybe because I had lived in Japan for a few years and was familiar with the characters. My children (8 & 11) watched it quite a few times, and they normally prefer more fast paced fare.

This movie offers a window into the Japanese generational family dynamic. A minimalist style of a daily comic strip brought to life is refreshing for its simplicity. A salary man dealing with mid life crisis connects a series of vignettes of typical Japanese family concerns. Ideal for anyone seeking a better understanding of family life from a Japanese perspective.

This DVD is a series of small skits. The first few were okay, and then it quickly slipped into tedium.

I liked it very much, especially each stories are very common, and funny pictures. I didn't expected so high, so maybe it is a good way not to be expected so much.
