Gemma James is adjusting to professional and personal changes that include her eagerly sought promotion to the rank of inspector--and a future now intricately entwined with Duncan Kincaid. But her new responsibilities are put to the test when she is placed in charge of a particularly brutal homicide: the lovely young wife of a wealthy antiques dealer has been murdered on fashionable Notting Hill. Dawn Arrowood was six weeks pregnant. Her lover, Alex Dunn, a porcelain dealer, appears absolutely devastated by her death, but the main focus of Gemma's investigation is soon Karl Arrowood, who had the most powerful motive for killing his unfaithful wife. But this case sets off warning bells for Duncan: It's far too similar to an unsolved murder in which an antiques dealer was killed in precisely the same way.

Good book. Enjoyed reading. Did not care for the ending. One Good Reads reader had to ask who was the killer. Crombie tends to pick the unlikeliest character as the killer. I also found out that I was not the only reader who did not know who Alex's mother was and how was she involved with Karl. Good Reads answered the first question (Julie was Alex's mother) but not the second.

Excellent read - enough substance to make a really interesting storyline.
Great character development - enough suspense to keep going to the end.
Will definitely read more from this author.

More life changes for Gemma and Duncan in this installment in the series. Also, I enjoyed the actual mystery and the characters involved in it. I figured out the killer by using a formula: it's never a main character, but a peripheral one. Enjoyed it nevertheless. Lots of description of the location (Notting Hill) as always.
