Tested every day with questions that must be answered in ten seconds, Emma, Norman, and Ray are the brightest children at Grace Field House orphanage. They have a good life there: clean clothes, good food, and lots of playtime out in the yard and surrounding forest. There’s only two rules: don’t go to the gatehouse and don’t go past the small fence in the middle of the forest. They break the first rule on the night one of the young ones get adopted and discover a horrible secret about their orphanage. Will they be able to escape before the same fate befalls them? A thrilling start to a very promising series, The Promised Neverland will keep the reader on the edge of their seat and wondering if these likeable children will be able to survive against the demons in their world.

Here's a manga whose cover is completely different than its contents. I wasn't expecting it to go as dark as it did, and that surprised and intrigued me. Yes, this concept has been done before (it feels like The Island or King of Thorn), but it was different enough that it kept me reading. I didn't care so much for the characters, which feel like the same in every anime or manga- the happy, cheerful one, the smart, bashful, caring one, and the quiet, emo know-it-all one. I tend to gloss over them after awhile and really focus on the story. I will be continuing to see if and how they get out. Great setup, let's see if it pays off.

I'm so impressed with this, my first Manga experience! It's so creepy I couldn't have watched it as a movie. Checking out #2 now . . . .

The Grace Field House: an idyllic orphanage in the middle of nowhere with strict rules and good company. Suddenly, Emma and her friends learn that there is more to the Grace Field House than there seems to be... and it is brutal. Turns out, Grace Field House is a farm for human flesh... sold to mysterious, horrendous monsters.

Honestly... I just wasn't captured by this. It seems kinda stereotypical, cliche, and I wasn't drawn to any of the characters or the plot. The little voice in my head, saying "everything will be solved and they'll escape--oh, there'll be plot twists, but..." was a constant presence.

CHARACTERS: The Promised Neverland has characters that (for me) tried too hard to be loved by the reader. There were some things that I found hard to accept, and I wasn't drawn to any of them.

PLOT: As above, our protagonists figure out the dystopia of the utopia, and plan to escape it. It just wasn't thrilling for me.

ACCURACY: --

RECOMMENDATION: If you have free time on your hands, check it out from the library before you read it.

This was recommended to me by a fellow manga reader and I really liked it. I love how it seems pretty innocent before taking a dark turn. I was warned about the dark turn, but it still took me by surprise.
