A lyrical and heart-breaking exploration of love, loss, and the power of things unseen, based on the award-winning novel by Ian McEwan and adapted by Stephen Butchard. With tenderness and insight, the movie explores a marriage devastated, the loss of childhood, the fluidity of time, grief, hope, and acceptance.

It's good to see that Benedict Cumberbatch plays in rather arty fare such as this film that appeared on PBS's Masterpiece Theatre. Some actors who hit it big, never return to smaller productions. This film explores the more private emotions that a couple goes through after their four year-old daughter disappears in a marketplace. The film is based on an award winning novel written by Ian McEwan. In some ways this film with all its sadness, still does not seem to visit hell as much as some of McEwan's works that I have read or seen.

I picked this up because it stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Kelly Macdonald. Having never read the book, nor read any description about the movie, I watched the film with fresh eyes. It's slow and sad and doesn't follow a straight timeline, but there's a beautiful quiet hope that threads through the scenes and a realness to the characters that makes the simplicity of the film striking.

This story, unfortunately, has been done too often. No more for me.

This drama film is about a children’s book writer who loses his only child in a supermarket, sending him and his wife into heartbreak. Dealing with the loss turns out to affect him in many unexpected ways. This movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kelly MacDonald, Stephen Campbell Moore, and Anna Madley amongst more. I felt like this movie had many unexpected and touching moments that really brought out the true meaning of this film. Although, it was slow paced and somewhat boring at times. I would rate this movie 3.5/5 stars and would recommend it to those who like calmer dramatic films. @The_Reviewer of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

Well directed, produced and acted. The weak point is the writing. Doesn't quite work.

Excruciatingly slow. Would have been a good 30 minute show, or maybe an hours TV program with plenty of commercial breaks. Lots of time to remember cliche metaphors, watching paint dry, watching grass grow, Cowboy Junkies on Quaalude and so on. So if you couldn't keep up with the dizzying pace of Longmire with its action packed scenes and fast talking hero, you'll enjoy this. NOT BBC quality, although Cumberbatch was delightful as always.

An amazingly effective cast and story. Only this group of actors could have made this very interesting story believable!

Though the plot is described in the "Library Journal" on this website, I sort of hope you don't read it! I had only the vaguest idea about the story when I sat down to watch it, and was amazed. For me, "ingenious" best describes it: the multiple meanings of "child in time" ... it's a story that I never could have concocted! The entire cast is terrific too. Many thanks to the library for adding this to its collection.

This movie aired on PBS this spring. What would you do if your young daughter disappears without a trace while out shopping with you? This movie deals with the fall out, the after math of such a tragedy, and the differing responses and reactions by the parents of the child. An excellent movie. A different role for Benedict Cumberbatch. Nevertheless his performance is genuine, emotionally charged and heart wrenching.
