The movie is about two siblings who live in complete isolation with their father. They are both his "sons." One day the father kills himself by hanging and his sons decide one of them needs to go to the nearby village to get a coffin. While in the village it is unveiled that the one son is actually a female although she has no idea of that, (she thinks she was castrated when she was very young and that is why she doesn't have testicles).

Warning: A disturbing horror story about a domineering religious widower and two teenage children living in an isolated farm house. One day, the father died and the siblings were left to fend for themselves, make sense of their world and confront their family’s traumatic past. Adapted from Gaétan Soucy's 2001 critically acclaimed novel of the same name.

What do we have here?
It appears to be the film translation of a gothic novel with the following influences:
1. David Lynch - "Eraserhead"
2. Bela Tarr - "Turin Horse"
3. Michael Haneke - "The White Ribbon"
4. Guy Maddin - "Keyhole", "Cowards Bend the Knee"
5. James Whale - "Frankenstein" (1931 version)
I must give the director, Simon Lavoie credit for his low light cost saving moves. It also makes the film much more threatening. Toss in lots of sub-gutteral yowlings and you have a rather unique piece of horror.

It is a natural disease for man to believe that he inherently possesses the truth, and thus he is eager to deny everything incomprehensible.

We don't even know where the village is!
-The horse knows.
===
What's your name? I'm Paul-Marie.
-Brother calls me "Brother", and Dad called us "Son".

They're coming... the villagers... they're evil. Father's dead, they're no longer afraid! They won't let us live here anymore! They'll lock us up... in an "or-pha-na-ge"!
===
In the village, they call me "she". They speak as if I were a girl.

I always thought that Dad had fashioned us from clay. But you see, it all starts from here.

We know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death has no dominion over him.
