There is no easy way to die... Unknown to DI Luc Callanach and the newly promoted DCI Ava Turner, a serial killer has Edinburgh firmly in his grip. The killer is taking his victims in the coldest, most calculating way possible, engineering slow and painful deaths by poison, with his victims entirely unaware of the drugs flooding their bloodstream until it is too late. But how do you catch a killer who hides in the shadows. A killer whose pleasure comes from watching pain from afar. Faced with their most difficult case yet, Callanach and Turner soon realise they face a seemingly impossible task...

This novel is part of a series and is not really a stand alone novel. The first 100 pages are about the relationships of the main characters that would be a yawn for readers new to the series and maybe even to readers of the previous books. However, a few deaths occur in those 100 pages which then become the focus of the book and are connected to others occurring later in the novel. The novel picks up speed mid way through as the author develops her two plot strands, one for each for her two main detectives. There is much suspense and violent action three quarters the way through. The novel is a combination of police procedural and psychopathic thriller.
