Reading this has been like attending a school reunion. It has been a long time since I was last immersed in the Tortallan Universe, so this book served as a trip down memory lane, as well as offering plenty of new information that fleshed out that world, in all sorts of directions. I was particularly grateful for the existence of various wikis (online) that served to lessen the embarrassment of not remembering who some of the characters were.

The detailed timeline at the very end offered a good chronology showing how the four main series - Songs of the Lioness, Wild Magic, Protector of the Small, and Trickster - intersected. Also I really enjoyed the profiles of various characters - including portraits - which reiterated Tamora Pierce's commitment to diversity in her characterisation.

This book is definitely one for the fans, offering them rich insight into their beloved world. It works best if you have read most of the four series mentioned above. It isn't really a standalone volume, nor a taster for those new to Tortall.

This isn't really a story of its own, just a collection of information about Tortall, in the form of letters and various documents written by familiar characters from the books. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable read.

I have read all of Tamora Pierce's books with my favorites being set in the world of Tortall so I couldn't wait to read Tortall: A Spies Guide. I loved learning more about some of my favorite characters and couldn't read this fast enough.
