As an artist, I'm drawn to movies about artists. This was interesting, although painful at times to watch because of the hardship and abuse that Maude, played by Sally Hawkins, is subjected to. But she's portrayed as a feisty woman that you can't help but love, and she doesn't let the hard times get in the way of her painting, which is her release. The man she marries, played by Ethan Hawke, is portrayed as a very cold and sometimes abusive man who lightens up and grows to love Maude. While based on a true story, I don't know how much of it is true and how much artistic license was taken. Definitely worth a watch.

This is an excellent human drama based on a true event. Sally Hawkins' portraying Maudie is simply faultless. For me the additional bonus is an exposure to Maudie's paintings, which are simplistic in layout and yet visually engaging. It is a great drama deserving of being taken in slowly and steadily. I find the exercise to be very rewarding.

Lovely film! It’s a movie not a documentary.

I'm torn as to how to rate this film - it's a wonderfully acted film with good screenplay and the look of the film is just gorgeous. Really great film making. BUT... the portrayal of Maud's husband and aunt seem to be way off. Everett is portrayed as a monstrous, angry and extremely abusive man. It took me until the end of the film to realize that he was not being portrayed with a mental disability. But a quick look on Youtube turned up a couple of interviews with the real Everett Lewis and frankly the man was a sweetheart. Was there more to the story that I don't know about? Perhaps, but apart from an antiquated view of the role of a wife (and give me a break, the man was born at the turn of the century), Everett was seemingly happy, gracious, and was responsible for encouraging his wife's artistic gift. This film is so slanderous - why though?

See this film. If you don't both laugh and cry, you don't have a heart. Sally Hawkins performance is a gem.

There are so many interesting dead or alive characters in our families, communities and world. This one is on the remarkable adult love story between the Canadian folk artist Maud Dowley and a fish-peddler Everett Lewis, complimented with beautiful setting, music and acting. Much more complex story than another romantic film "Under the Sun (Swedish: Under solen 1998)" which also started off with an illiterate farmer looking for a housekeeper...

Noted that many comments were about the husband Everett. Suggest to watch the "Deleted Scenes number 7 – on marriage and love in Special Features."

Well acted and written story of how two misfits got together and forged a life until Maud Lewis's death (March 7, 1903 - July 30, 1970), in Digby, Nova Scotia.
Maud, played fantastically by Sally Hawkins (Paddington 1&2; The Shape of Water: 2017), and Ethan Hawke (Juliet Naked: 2018), playing her spinster husband.
Well worth bonus features, as they show the real Maud and Everett and 24 pictures of the real house. This film was filmed in Newfoundland, but the real house is displayed in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

I started watching this film before I knew the history of Maud Lewis. I had to stop the movie and read some of her background and then I found the film very interesting. I thought her husband was a total jerk, rude, uncaring and abusive. Maud deserved so much better than him and the life they shared. I realize he had a rough life as well, but nothing like Maude suffered. Her paintings were a reflection of her sweet personality. Sally Hawkins portrayal of Maud Lewis was outstanding.

A nice movie with a slow introduction into Maud's family environment. The slow development and growing love between Maud and Ethan is moving.

"Little Bird" lyrics

Your heart sings like a kettle
And your words, they boil away like steam
And a lie burns long while the truth bites quick
A heart is built for both it seems

You are lonely as a church
Despite the queuing out your door
I am empty as a promise, no more

When the time comes
And rights have been read
I think of you often
But for once I meant what I said

I was salted by your hunger
Now you've gone and lost your appetite
And a little bird is every bit as handy in a fight
I am lonely as a memory
Despite the gathering 'round the fire
Aren't you every bird on every wire?

When the time comes
And rights have been read
I think on you often
But for once I meant what I said
Here I stay, I, I lay me down
In a house by the Hill
I'm dug from the rubble, and cut from the kill
Here I stay, I, I lay me down
In a house by the Hill
I'm dug from the rubble, and cut from the kill
I'm dug from the rubble, and cut from the kill
I'm dug from the rubble, and cut from the kill

Reporter: Everett, you must feel very lucky to have Maud as your wife. Maud Lewis has been an artist most of her life. Her paintings have even been sold to Vice President Nixon. This happy couple, who only live with the bare necessities of life, and yet somehow, they flourish.
Everett: I chop the wood. I do the dishes. Now all she does is paint. Paint a picture a day. Paint all seasons. I told her a wife is supposed to mind her husband. She does as she likes.
Reporter: Who would have thought this little, arthritic woman living on the fringe of society would have such incredible and far-reaching success? You can find Maud Lewis still selling her paintings from the front steps of her little house here in Marshalltown, Nova Scotia.

Maud... can you teach me how to paint?
-No one can teach that. If you wanna paint, you paint, I suppose. I don't go nowhere, so... paint from memory, I suppose. I make my designs up.
I've known you for years, Maud.
-Yeah. It's true. I know.
And I'm still trying to figure out what makes you tick.
-Don't know. Don't-- I don't want for much, you know? As long as I got a brush in front of me, I don't care. A window. I love a window. A bird whizzing by. Bumblebee. It's always different. The whole of life. The whole of life already framed. Right there.
===
I don't know why people pay money for these, my 5-year-old could do better.
-Maybe. Maybe he could, but he didn't-- Maud did.

Deleted Scenes 7 – on marriage and love in Special Features:

Ever feel like you’re in love with Everett?
-Yes. I do.
And is he in love with you?
-You’d have to ask him. How would I know that?
Well… does he smile at you when you walk into the room? Does he do nice little things to show you he cares? Does he pay you compliments?
-I guess your—Your husband must be real nice to you.
No. God no. No.
-No?
No, but I didn’t get married for love. I married for… I don’t know. Money? Make my parents happy. Because I was bored. Stupid, really. Marriage should be preserved for great love.
-No. We should just be happy with what we got. Feel that sun?
