Murder, betrayal, office politics, temptation, it's all in a day's work for Detective Salvo Montalbano. With intuition and a cadre of police officers, Montalbano solves crimes in the fictional small city of Vigata. This work brings him across the paths of unforgettable characters who could only come from Sicily. He also wages a personal war with his own demons, which fight against his professional ideals and personal commitment to beautiful long-distance girlfriend, Livia.

Enjoyed the Pyramid of Mud story, especially since it showcases his considerable acting talent, several mini-stings, and his bickering staff joining together to support him. The other story was blandly traditional: a spurned woman chooses a nasty form of revenge via using her young child, and of course gets discovered, and another woman is brutally killed as an illustration of what happens to prostitutes. The majority of women would never use their children like this, and the majority of women would choose minimum-wage labor rather than selling themselves. In the still-patriarchal Sicilian world, married women would not also have a husband stand idly by while she dangerously earns the family money (there's a name for these kinds of "men"...). Illustrative, though, to have the interview with the elderly author, Andrea. Now in his late eighties, these stories are his creations and bear the imprint of his time period, experience, and fantasy.

The plots aren't memorable but watching this series is like having a sit in with friends in a beautiful scenic setting. Only thing is ,there are so many different actresses playing the part of Montalbano's girlfriend Livia, it might as well give him a new girlfriend altogether.
