Simon Winchester scores again! This is an exhausively researched work, spanning the origins, character, wonders, terrors and human dramas of the great western ocean around which modern western civilization has evolved. Winchester reveals the cambrian-era birth of the ocean, the magnificence of its creatures great and small, its surprizing role and impact upon man and nature alike -- and even its probable future and ultimate disappearance. Who knew of the vast ecological importance (or even the existence of Prochlorococcus? Or that a connection exists among shipping containers, parliamentary democracy, the Hanseatic league and the founding of a Jewish state? Despite being such a scolarly work, this is an entertaining, engrossing page-turner.
