"Koushun Takami's notorious high-octane thriller envisions a nightmare scenario: a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill until only one survivor is left standing. Criticized as violent exploitation when first published in Japan--where it became a runaway best seller--Battle Royale is a Lord of the Flies for the 21st century, a potent allegory of what it means to be young and (barely) alive in a dog-eat-dog world."-- Publisher's description.

This is a reprint of the original 2001 novel. I mention the date because Hunger Games was written after this book. The writer of Hunger Games has always denied plagiarism and to his credit the author of Battle Royale has stated he is happy that people are talking about his book again after the popularity of Hunger Games made many online and literary critics point out the similarities between the two books. Anyone who reads Battle Royale will have their jaw drop at how much Hunger Games is a cheap sanitized version of this disturbing Japanese novel. In this post apocalyptic alternative history of Japan tale teens from the same graduation class are selected to kill one another for public entertainment and to maintain social order.
