Staff Book Review: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

As she approaches her sixteenth birthday, Sabrina Spellman faces an impossible choice: accept her birthright and become a witch, or choose to live her life as a mortal and experience real love with her sweetheart, Harvey. A simple enough premise, but throw in two deranged aunts, an undead demoness bent on blood revenge, a talking cat with his own agenda, and a visiting cousin ... (more)

I absolutely LOVED this Sabrina reboot. If you are a die hard fan of the 90's light-hearted comedy television show, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, you're probably not going to fangirl this dark reboot. The artwork is amazing, and I love how they re-explored the story line of Sabrina's origins as a half mortal and half witch. The new Netflix series is also a great adaptation of this graphic novel as well.

I find the Netflix adaptation to be actually better than comic. In the show it looks like the 1960s just like the comic but also the Archie universe is referenced. The show exaggerates Sabrina's predicaments being half witch and half mortal, the comic does not. Also the show has a very Harry Potter-esque take whereas the comic has none whatsoever. I like the comic but surprisingly I like the show better and i think that's quite rare.

As she approaches her sixteenth birthday, Sabrina Spellman faces an impossible choice: accept her birthright and become a witch, or choose to live her life as a mortal and experience real love with her sweetheart, Harvey. A simple enough premise, but throw in two deranged aunts, an undead demoness bent on blood revenge, a talking cat with his own agenda, and a visiting cousin who may not be as innocent as he appears, the approach here is wildly thrilling. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina isn’t for everyone. For starters, it is incredibly dark: it deals with witchcraft, and not your run of the mill, Bewitched, wart on the nose, riding a broom kind of witchcraft, either: it’s more ‘bride of Satan,’ human sacrificing, end of the world inducing, demon unleashing, ancient ritual invoking kind of witchcraft, the kind that really spooks you through and through. The writing is incredible, the drawings are atmospheric and chilling, and as a super fan of the new CW show Riverdale, I was elated to see that there is a connection between Sabrina’s Greendale and Archie’s Riverdale universes. I couldn’t put this graphic novel down, and that’s saying a lot for someone who doesn’t particularly like graphic novels! I was so engrossed in this that I pre-ordered the next book. I can’t wait to follow this scary story even further! (Submitted by Mandi)

This is not the Sabrina you remember from the feel good 90's TV show. This Sabrina is a real witch and along with that comes some pretty dark themes. I very much enjoyed the darkness and look forward to what the Netflix series based on this graphic novel has to offer. Chilling.

A horrifying spin on a generally light and comedic series. The horror found in this comic is grotesque so the people out there who have weak stomachs and are generally sensitive to body horror and slasher genres this book is not for you, however if you enjoy the genres aforementioned, then this book is very much for you. I myself am a fan of horror but this book in my opinion was just to dark and almost depressing. I had a hard time enjoying the book mostly because I didn't enjoy this alternate universe. I suppose I would recommend it just for a quick read if you like horror, I give it an average rating.
