As a former theater kid, I am not exaggerating when I say this is one of the best modern musicals. The soundtrack is as dreamy as its cinematography and its sweet message about pursing your interests.

I normally don't like musicals but this one was solid. A romantic drama about artistic failure.

I don’t like this type of movie, but this one is actually really good with great plot, cinematography, acting, and music. Mia and Sebastian’s theme is a good piece. City of Stars sounds dreamy. The movie is not cheesy at all. The actors do sing and play the instruments by themselves the whole time as part of their acting. The ending is not a typical happy ending but it is a really good ending and what makes the movie overall even better. Not everybody can stand jazz, just fast forward that part.

I loved this movie! I would watch it anytime! All the comments below are simply not true. They don't understand how great this movie really is! I would recommend this to anyone who loves to sing and dance! 5 star!

Don't remember

this one won an Oscar for Emma Stone, yet my younger (yet still old ) brother recently referred to her as 'not a good actress.' he had seen her in BIRDLAND, also, so I don't know WHAT GOES ON, in his head. Maybe he was quoting (unbeknownst to me) either my nephew, sister-in-law, or elderly father (for whom I have already found a birthday gift, from the ground, outside a metro bus station, outside crossroads shopping center, yesterday evening).

I know La La Land won many awards but the story wasn't anything I haven't seen/read before - struggling actor/musician romance. Colorful cinematography. For me, the Bonus Material was more interesting than the movie. It's like a Broadway story that went straight to screen 1st - watch for it on Broadway in future.

The imagery and colours are sharp, diverse, and well complemented. The production value is top notch, the pacing is good. The story is cheesy and unimaginative. The plot is as one thought up by an ignorant eighteen year old in film school in L.A.

The movie is about romance. It is about two people who actually love each other enough to step aside and allow the other to achieve their dream. The one wanted an old jazz club to preserve old jazz and the other wanted to be an actress. However, to stay together as a couple one of them would have to sacrifice their dream. But because they actually loved each other and was unselfish they wanted to see each other succeed in their dreams. At the end of the movie you find that each is successful in life and with their careers but they still have the compassion for each other. But they are truly happy in allowing each other reach their careers in life. It was a well performance and the Ryan Gosling was well suited for the part. The movie is of reality and does not have a fairy tail ending.

I just don't understand why people were so obsessed with this movie.

Quite a few in IMDb already but here is one not there -- Audition (The Fools Who Dream)

Stone's aunt P1 of 2:

My aunt used lived in Paris.
I remember, she used to come home and tell us...
These stories about being abroad and...
I remember she told us that she jumped into the river once...
She smiled...
Leapt ...
Without looking
And tumbled into...
The Seine
The water was freezing
She spent a month sneezing
But said she would do it again
Here's to the ones who dream
Foolish as they may seem
Here's to the hearts that ache
Here's to the mess we made
She captured a feeling Sky with no ceilling

Stone's aunt P2 of 2:

The sunset inside a frame
She lived in her liquor And died with a flicker
I'll always remember the flame
Here's to the ones who dream
Foolish as they may seem
Here's to the hearts that ache
Here's to the mess we made
She told me...
"A bit of madeness is key"
"To give us new colors to see"
"Who knows where it will lead us?"
"And that's why they need us"
Bring on the rebels
The ripples from pebbles
The painters, and poets, and plays
And here's to the fools who dream
Crazy as they may seem
Here's to the hearts that break
Here's to the mess we made
I trace it all back to then
Her, and the snow, and the Seine
Smiling trough it
She said she'd do it
