Adaptation of the Shakespeare play, filmed during a stage performance: "This immersive and darkly poetic cinematic experience brings the play's iconic fairies, spells and hallucinatory lovers to life ... the feats of visual imagination are ingenious and plentiful, but beating at the center of the film is an emotionally moving take on the deeper human aspects of Shakespeare's beloved tale"--Container.

The diversity poster child of Shakespeare's venerable comedy - so many colors, so many different accents. The problem is, good comedy requires a certain uniformity of speech, so this production is fraught from inception. Also, it's filmed with a live audience, who are unpleasantly visible in every frame, which detracts from the stage and the crucial suspension of the viewer's disbelief. The costumes are similarly awkward and, frankly ugly, the set minimal and nothing like the moonlit magic one expects of a midsummer forest by night. A great disappointment especially after waiting for it for so long. For my money, the best look and feel for this play is the Glyndebourne production of the Britten opera a few years ago.
