"As a boy, Robert Kaplan listened to his truck-driver father tell evocative stories about traveling across America in his youth, travels in which he learned to understand the country literally from the ground up. In Earning the Rockies, Kaplan undertakes his own cross-country journey to recapture an appreciation of American geography often lost in the jet age. Along the way, he witnesses both prosperity and decline--increasingly cosmopolitan cities that thrive on globalization, impoverished towns denuded by the loss of manufacturing--and paints a bracingly clear picture of America today. Kaplan lays bare the roots of American greatness--the fact that we are a nation, empire, and continent all at once--and how westward expansion shaped our national character, and should shape our foreign policy.

Big thanks to the gentleman who suggested I read this book. It's beautiful when a customer feels that strongly about something they have read. The information and views of the author explained the USA in ways this Canadian would never see.

As a history and geography fan, I really enjoyed this book. I hadn’t thought about how the rivers in the US have helped to strengthen the country while the rivers in the USSR divided the country. I found the concept that if the US had been settled from the west to the east, our country might have different strengths and values.

At once memoir, travelogue and an overview of America’s foreign policy role, all viewed through a lens that focuses on America’s geography. As a person who grew up in the West and loves its social histories I found this look at Manifest Destiny intriguing. His profiles of environmentalists like Bernard DeVoto, Wallace Stegner and John Wesley Powell were familiar ground, which was great reading again. It was last month’s [September 2018] New York Times/PBS NewsHour ‘Now Read This’ selection. Other readers had mixed reviews.
