"A young woman and her husband, admitted to hospital to have a baby, request that their nurse be reassigned--they are white supremacists and don't want Ruth, who is black, to touch their baby. The hospital complies, but the baby later goes into cardiac distress when Ruth is on duty. She hesitates before rushing in to perform CPR. When her indecision ends in tragedy, Ruth finds herself on trial, represented by a white public defender who warns against bringing race into the courtroom. As the two come to develop a truer understanding of each other's lives, they begin to doubt the beliefs they each hold most dear."-- From publisher.

Powerful and thought provoking. Told from the perspective of 3 culturally diverse people, this unsettling portrait of overt and unconscious racism left me needing time for quiet introspection. This would be the perfect for a book club.

This is one of my all time favorite books. I recommended it to several of my friends - most of them are nurses and they too loved it. Very realistic plot.

In this well-intentioned novel, Picoult explores racism in contemporary America. She weaves an interesting story and, along the way, she nudges her readers toward self-examination.

Thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook it was one of the audio books I hear in my car, and continued to take into my home and listen to it.
It was interesting and held my attention, that I continued listening to it on my home audio system.
Book is about the real life challenges of discrimination and those who are discriminated against cannot make others understand totally how bad it and how wide spread it is.

The main character goes out of her way to take a chance on perhaps what could have been life destroying risk to expose racism & its attached discrimination to what it is and to how the discriminated react to it.
Shows how racial discrimination is subtle and practiced right across the world in the guise of doing their jobs. Also shows how those discriminated against cope with it in terms of those terrified by it, those fighting against it, both religiously & culturally.
Strongly recommended, besides being good reading or listening it had some deep lessons for all.

It is amazing how you can look in a mirror your whole life and think you are seeing yourself clearly. And then one day, you peel off a filmy gray layer of hypocrisy, and you realize you’ve never truly seen yourself at all... if our legacy is not entitlement, it must be hope. Because if it’s not, then we become the shiftless, the wandering, the conquered. We become what they think we are.
