Wonderful black comedy mystery revenge movie. All within a small backward Australian "Mayberry" town. Kate Winslet did a magnificent job seeking her personal justice and retribution while Judy Davis' acting chops as the mother are great as usual.

Quirky and fun, but complex story with unique characters . I enjoyed this more than the book, which is unusual.

Best little movie I have seen in a long time. Ah, revenge! Tilly returns to the small town that sent her away when she was but a young girl. She returns to her mother's home to start her dress making business, reconnect with the town and to find out why she was sent away as a young child. This is a satisfying story of secrets revealed, romance, tragedy and revenge. There is a cast of characters rivalled by no other. Well worth the watch. This movie has a quirkiness that may not appeal to some.

Very interesting movie. I loved the quirkiness of characters and the clothes were interesting too. You'd have to like the oddball to really get into this.
Not bad overall.

Judy Davis was great, as usual. I wonder how Liam Hemsworth liked being a sex object?

I love the range of comments. Obviously not everyone likes this kind of movie. It's camp, over the top, entertaining and not at all subtle. I thought it was great fun.

I would recommend reading the book before watching the movie. The movie makes more sense having read the book. I liked the quirky characters, story line and setting.

I found this movie to be extremely interesting as it was outside the ordinary sort of film. The characters, especially the main character's mother, are portrayed quite vividly. It gives you a feeling of what life must be like for an outsider in a small rural town. Did I enjoy it? Most definitely, yet despite there being so much to laugh about, there was also much in the story that one might find depressing.

The 'plot', such as it is, wanders from broad comedy to melodrama to just plain silly. There are a few nice touches, such as the musical conjuring up of dueling hombres in spaghetti westerns, but the dialogue is never sharp enough for the film's comedic intent and the editing left it way too long. Judy Davis is outstanding as the heroine's wise-cracking mother, and of course no one is going to get tired of looking at Kate Winslet. But overall the film falls flat and does not even pass muster as a harmless way to spend an evening.

Hmmm-- this was interesting and intriguing at the very beginning...but I waited for a few more minutes. And then- Nah.. I could not watch this movie any longer. :(

I'm back, you bastards.
Well, our Gert's a handsome, capable girl. She knows feedstock, haberdashery...
-(WHISPERS) Mother!
And what powders are lethal to maggots and fly-struck merinos!
What kind of bloody awful music is this?
-Blues. Oh! Music to hang by. Yeah, I don't know. I like it.
She's got a lot of pain in her voice.
-Yeah. Billie Holiday.
Sounds like she needs one.
Style and decency. Some designers just don't seem to know the difference, do they?
Hmm. Fire someplace.
-Yes. Dungatar.
Burning off rubbish, were they? Looks like they overdid it.
-You never met the rubbish.
