Can you forgive the past? It's 1963 and a young German reporter has been assigned the suicide of a holocaust survivor. The news story seems straighforward, this is a tragic insight into one man's suffering. But a long hidden secret is discovered in the pages of the dead man's diary. What follows is life-and-death hunt for a notorious former concentration camp-commander, a man responsible for the deaths of thousands, a man as yet unpunished.

This is quite different from the usual Forsyth fare: No spies here, although there is certainly no shortage of villans and subversive scheming going on. The arch-enemies here are neo-Nazis. His hero this time is also quite different from the robust types often created by Forsyth; he's a somewhat nebulous second-rate journalist who seems to be getting himself involved way over his head in a situation for which he is ill-equipped. And his motivation for undertaking such a risky enterprise remains a mystery, causing a reader to wonder if he's just a dilettante or if there's more to the story; there is.

Fairly well written spy thriller set in 1960's Germany with ex Nazi's being the antagonists. A good beach/airplane book. Worth it for anyone who is interested in the subject.
