The New York Times bestselling author of Only a Kiss launches a new series with the death of an earl and the revelation of a scandalous secret... Humphrey Westcott, Earl of Riverdale, has died, leaving behind a fortune that will forever alter the lives of everyone in his family--including the daughter no one knew he had... Anna Snow grew up in an orphanage in Bath knowing nothing of the family she came from. Now she discovers that the late Earl of Riverdale was her father and that she has inherited his fortune. She is also overjoyed to learn she has siblings. However, they want nothing to do with her or her attempts to share her new wealth. But the new earl's guardian is interested in Anna... Avery Archer, Duke of Netherby, keeps others at a distance. Yet something prompts him to aid Anna in her transition from orphan to lady. As London society and her newfound relatives threaten to overwhelm Anna, Avery steps in to rescue her and finds himself vulnerable to feelings and desires he has hidden so well and for so long.

This was a deeply romantic story with a truly well-drawn, multi-layered hero and heroine. It had a beautiful Georgette Heyer style of writing that made it top quality. I was on the edge of my chair waiting for whatever was to come next. Loved it! Looking forward to reading the sequel.

It was hard to like many of the characters in this story. It seemed many were wrapped up in themselves and had little consideration for others. Even though many would say the main character, Anna, was only trying to be her own person, she had many stubborn streaks when others tried to lend their help. The one redeeming character was Avery who had a great sarcastic wit about him, although, even he got sappy in the end.
It was sort of a Cinderella story - from rags to riches, but it just didn't have the excitement of Cinderella for me.
The other thing I noticed throughout the book was repetition. It seems you would learn something at the beginning, only to have the same story told again later. I wish the author could have done more than repeat character events.

I really enjoyed following Anna from an orphan to a Lady to a Duchess in the early 1800s in England.

I usually love Mary Balogh's books, but this one was very disappointing. Very boring. After reading a boring chapter, the next chapter begins with the heroine writing a 3+ page letter to her friend about what just happened. So you get bored twice.
Hope this was a fluke and the rest of the series is readable.

There is something so delightfully Georgette Heyer-esque about Mary Balogh's books, and it makes them a joy to read. This one is no exception, and it's the opening to a promising new series. Romance fans will delight in the snappy dialogue between the heroine -- an orphan who learns she's actually the legitimate daughter of an earl -- and the hero -- a short (!!), foppish duke. There are enough members of the Westcott family to keep Balogh telling their stories for years to come -- and I, for one, cannot wait to read them.
