The only thing I liked about this was the scenery in Greece. And perhaps the young boy.
The rest of the cast was unlikable for me. Especially didn't like the two older boys.
Watched the first disc, season one - up to where the red/blond haired boy was chopping up a murdered rabbit. Sick.
Sure don't know what the big fuss is all about with this series.

What a delightful treat, and, good grief, what a time! The characters are so completely themselves, often blundering through their lives, stumbling, recovering and managing to forgive each other and themselves.
The setting and time period are so authentically portrayed, I was transported into their lives and marveled at their resilience and determination. Lawrence and Gerrald are so gifted and so different it was fascinating to get a glimpse into their early years. Looking forward to season 2.

i'm afraid my rating may not be really valid because i mistakenly put disc 2 in first and started watching it with episode 4. however, i immediately didn't like any of the characters. if they had been this despicable from the beginning, though, i probably would've stopped watching pretty quickly, too, and also given it just half a star. i dunno. to me, the 2 older boys seemed full of themselves, arrogant, insensitive, etc... the mom seemed a little too absorbed in her own problems that it was no wonder her kids were that way. i couldn't watch more than 15 minutes of even that 1 episode.

I disliked all of the characters in this series. Can’t imagine why I’d want to spend time with any of them! Too many other really good offerings out there! Whiners and nasty people don’t hold any allure for me.

I didn't know much about this family or the book series but what a delight this was!! I thoroughly enjoyed this and the drama and humor throughout! If your a fan of other PBS series (i.e. downtown Abbey, poldark, Grantchester) than you may also enjoy!!

I didn't know much about this show beforehand, although when I lived in the UK, I became acquainted with the names of Gerald Durrell and his brother, Lawrence, the writer of "racy" fiction.

I expected this to be, oh, maybe syrupy and sentimental, but it is neither. At times I found it laugh-out-loud funny. I have to get this back to the library, but I think I'll take it out again sometime soon and give it a second viewing.

How wonderful to see Leslie Caron again in this delightful series! I loved her so much when I was a teenager and she starred in movies such as "Lili" and "An American in Paris". She was in an episode of "SVU" (a series I normally detest) and she shone with her old talent and complete believability.
Some reviewers have criticized the Durrells and I can understand that. The first time I watched this series I had a hard time with the way the boys treated their mother, too, and other aspects of it. I tried to remember that "back when", keeping animals caged up as a sign of love was normal (remember Radar's menagerie on MASH?). I had goldfish and tiny turtles when I was young, and I didn't care for them very well. I think the current understanding of how we should treat animals well has really been just since the 1970's. In the neighborhoods I lived in, before that, hardly anyone had their dogs and cats spayed/neutered, or walked their dogs on leashes. Now, that's considered normal among most middle class pet owners. But it still isn't the norm among all classes of pet owners.
So I try to give Gerry Durrell a pass with his animal cages, given the times he lived in. And I've found upon second viewing, taking care to really look and listen, I am not nearly so judgemental about the way Larry and Leslie treat their mother. If you'll notice, they also stand up for her in ways she, and I, find quite touching.

I loved this series and wish there were more. My family and I also lived on a Greek island, for 10 years, needing to make a living, educating and connecting with expats. This happened years after the Durrell's experience and I found many parts of the series true. We even had our own budding animal collector (our living room was filled with caged snakes), a writer, and an artist. All the children read and reread Gerald Durrell's books and savored them. Lawrence Durrell's bio speaks for itself. As it so happened, we did not have to worry one bit about educating them during those years, they sought out experiences, listened to music, read, learned languages, connected with Greeks and, many other nationalities.
