Set in the South of France, London, and Paris, a gorgeous, innocent mistress of a Russian oligarch gradually finds independence via her own efforts and through her friendship with the artist son of a world-renowned painter and his devoted muse/now restaurateur mother, reminiscent of Picasso and La Colombe D'or in St-Paul-de-Vence. Discovered on a freezing Moscow street by a Russian billionaire, Natasha Leonova lived for seven years under his protection, immersed in rarefied luxury, while he pursues his activities in a dark world that she guesses at but never sees. Natasha's job is to keep Vladimir happy, ask no questions, and be discreet. Theo Luca is the son of a world famous difficult artist, Lorenzo Luca, who left his wife and son with a fortune in artwork they refuse to sell. Theo becomes obsessed with Natasha; Vladimir with Luca's artwork; both become dangerous obsessions.

I love Danielle Steele’s books and have never been disappointed after reading. This is a story about love, fate, denial, luxury, obsession, and memories. Natasha is the mistress of Vladimir Stanislas, a Russian billionaire, who feels money can buy anything. Theo is the son of Lorenzo Luca, a famous painter. Maylis, Theo’s mother, refuses to sell any of Lorenzo’s paintings. After a huge offer, a painting is sold. Theo is obsesses with memories of Natasha and with this obsession, paints her from memory. You will be sailed on Vladimir’s ship over the world. Secrets will be unveiled about stolen paintings. Just when you believe that there is nothing else that could happen, it does. Fast read that will have you feeling good at the end.

Danielle Steel's books are generally Women Centric and "The Mistress" is no exception. Though there are important male characters there is no doubt that this novel is about Natasha - Vladimir's mistress. The characters are somewhat 'larger than life' and yet predictable. A quick, easy read; not literature by any means.
