Nothing unique or especially interesting. overused plot points don't do anything to add to the general story. a heartwarming story to be sure, but nothing new that you haven't read many times before. A sibling deathly ill, parents consumed with caring for them while the subjects main child goes neglected and lonely.

As a parent reading this, I was supremely annoyed by the parents' lack of truth-telling with Thyme. They definitely withheld information that may have been hard to swallow at first, but would have made the transition much smoother in the long run. Thyme would have approached kids at school with a different attitude. She wouldn't have had miscommunications with her friend back in San Diego. And she would maybe feel less guilt and shame over her plan to go back home in spite of her brother's illness.

Thyme is eleven years old and leaving behind her life in San Diego to travel to New York City with her family. They are taking her little brother, Val, short for Valerian, to a cancer trial. He's five years old and has neuroblastoma which is a kind of cancer that attacks the nerves. He's in remission after chemotherapy, but this cancer medicine trial could help prevent the cancer from coming back. Thyme is trying to be a good sister, helping her family to earn time for her jar to spend on what she really wants. She's keeping that a secret, though, because what she really wants is to go back to San Diego. Can she possibly earn enough time to persuade her parents to head back early? How long is this cancer trial going to last, anyway? Can Thyme find a way to balance her daily life in New York while still yearning for home?
