Plenty of people in the picturesque town of Santa Teresa, California, wanted Laurence Fife, a ruthless divorce attorney, dead. Including, thought the cops, his young and beautiful wife, who was convicted of the crime.

Now, eight years later and out on parole, Nikki Fife hires Kinsey Millhone to find out who really killer her husband. Kinsey must pursue a trail that's eight years old: one that leads from a young boy, born deaf, whose memory cannot be trusted; to a lawyer defensively loyal to his dead partner - and disarmingly attractive to Millho≠ to a not-so-young secretary with too high a salary for far too few skills.

This train will twist to include them all, with Kinsey following every turn until it finally twists back on itself and she fins herself face-to-face with a killer cunning enough to get away with murder.

Like meeting an old friend
Nikki Fife served 8 years for a murder she claims she didn't commit. Now she wants Kinsey to clear her name.
The character of Kinsey Millhone, and her introduction on page 1 ("My name is Kinsey Millhone") is the same general format that appears in all the books. Just the facts. But she talks about having killed someone and that it weighs on her mind. Cue the flashback. And the book has all the classic elements that show up in almost all the books...her apartment near Henry, Rosie's, multiple cases at once, index cards to keep track of details, Deitz, Dolan, etc. This is a classic whodunnit with lots of twists and turns and misinformation from suspects, sometimes intentional, sometimes not.
There is a bit too much relationship-angst in this outing, albeit briefly.
I received no compensation, not even a free copy, in exchange for this review. I am not personal friends with the author, nor do I follow her on social media.

The first book in the series of the life of Kinsey Millhone, private investigator. I like the book, read easy and quickly. Private investigators do not have the excitement as police officers so it was expected that there would not be much going on but the mystery of the investigation and actually "who done it". The twists and turns were good and kept me interested enough to know I really needed to get to the end to find out who did it. I was hoping there would be some reaction written in about how Nikki took the news considering she spent eight years in prison. Would you ever have closure? How would you feel? Maybe there will be something in the "B" book. All in all, I will continue reading the series in between my other reads. I really like a good mystery.

The first book in a long and famous series by this author. The only turnoff for me in her writing style is her love of description over plot movement. Every scene is set with rather detailed descriptions that do not add to the action and will turn some readers off.

Quite possibly the worst audio book narrator I've ever come across. She speaks in a near monotone, with little or no differentiation between characters. Not sure I'll try another Grafton book on tape if she is the one reading it. My 15 year old son noticed it too. Asked how I could follow along...

I was surprised to find the start of this long-running series to be so dull. The writing was uninspiring and the detecting was terrible. (Kinsey didn't want anyone to know she was in Vegas, so she wiped her hotel room clean of fingerprints... and then paid with a credit card? Really?) I will not be continuing with the series.

Sue's first, back when she was still young and bitter. By the time you get to "K," she loses her zany humorous edge, and her books become more serious, less enjoyable, still you feel compelled to finish, and now we are on "W"...or is it "X"...

Beware, this series is addictive.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. There are a few interesting twists and turns that Kinsey has to face in discovering the real murderer of an unpleasant lawyer. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
