Getting on

The Complete Second Season

DVD - 2015
Average Rating:

The series takes place in the geriatric wing of a struggling hospital and follows a staff of overworked doctors and nurses and their elderly patients. Though the tone is darkly comic, this critically-acclaimed series addresses very real issues such as death, hopelessness, abusive patients and the things it takes to survive a high-stress work environment. The hospital's care workers do whatever it takes to stay sane while dealing with unruly patients, their children and their bosses.

Dawn: Dr. James, we can't do any extraordinary intervention.
James: Mm-hmm. Why not? Work her legs. Get the IV going again. A warm blanket.
We're bring you back, Ruth. Is that all right with you? ...
Keep on the Sunny Side lyrics from end of final episode (see video for this final scene:)
There's a dark and a troubled side of life
There's a bright and a sunny side, too
Though we meet with the darkness and strife
The sunny side we also may view
Keep on the sunny side
Always on the sunny side
Keep on the sunny side of life
It can help you every day
It will brighten up your stay
If you keep on the sunny side of life
There's a dark and a troubled side of life
There's a bright and a sunny side, too ... If we'll keep on the sunny side of life

James: Andrew, you did a quick skin test for allergies, correct? No. Um All right, well, we have two issues here. Um, the first is the manner in which you dealt with this situation.
Dawn: Well, I have just found that sometimes doctors require a forceful manner to get a point across.
James: Sometimes. Andrew, could you please follow me... You could have ruined your career! You could have ruined my career! Geriatrics is hanging on by its fingernails. We're about to become a food court!
James: We have a choice. You are sick enough to stay here with us, if that's what you wish, or you can go home now I want you to listen very closely with your mother and a nurse and a morphine pump to be adjusted to your level of pain. You would be in charge of making yourself more comfortable. Do you understand? Thank you.

James: I have been asked to participate in the Cochrane Study on Perianal Injectable Bulking Agents for the Treatment of Fecal Incontinence... , how many women do you know with fecal incontinence? And yet, it's this crazy aunt in the attic of female geriatrics. Nobody talks about it, everybody lives in terror of it... We plump up our lips with collagen to give better blow jobs, and make ourselves more kissable, but for us to use that same material in tissue that is infinitely more meaningful to us. Our anal sphincters, is to live out our lives with dignity instead of discarded dirty dolls.

Colleen: People ask me all the time if doing hospice is depressing. And it is for some people, but I mean, yeah, it can be, but it's for real.

James: When I jokingly referred to certain Nurses as being worthless and less worthless... And mind you, I did not say "less than worthless." Which is worse than worthless. I did not mention which Nurses I was referring to, nor in what order I was disposing of them.
Pepperell: You are... Entitled to... 36 weeks maternity leave... 18 weeks ordinary, 18 weeks additional... And also flexible work arrangements in your last trimester.
Dawn: Wow. I didn't realize...
Pepperell: Yeah, they don't want you to know. You're entitled to paid time off, for prenatal and postnatal care. I can get you a private fridge for your expressed breast milk when the time comes.
James: Now the profit margins on healthy hospice patients who survive for years with minimal care exceeds 20%. Now you don't get that in oil, you don't get that in pharmaceuticals. And patients can pretty much stay indefinitely. You and I just need
to recertify that they remain - terminally ill every 60 days.

Sasso: And I'm very happy to discuss all the ways a more vigorous partnership with LBAG Hospice would enhance your bottom line.
James: Like how?
Sasso: Well, full-on hospice-hospital partnership really allows you to tap into reimbursements from patients' unused Medicaid Hospice benefits.
James: How many patients would I have to enroll to make 20, 30 thou a month?
Sasso: Well, 1200 people died in your Medical Center last year, so enroll 50% into hospice for one, even two days, and that's more than one mil in Medicaid billing, flat-out. And the tip of the iceberg...There are very fine legal and ethical lines - that we can't cross...
James: Sure.
Sasso: But we make our profits on this side of the line, not on that side. ... The general rule of thumb is to get 'em early, keep 'em longer, and elevate them from regular care to continuous care as soon as that's practicable.
James: Right.

loved the show but then watched the doc "Dying at Grace"... don't do that

I rarely laugh out loud at a show but I did with this one. What a bizarre group of people with wonderful chemistry.

I like this just as much as the eye-opening first season as the staffs of the Extended Care Unit continued to deal with both their professional and private lives. There were some gaps but filled in the extras, see the deleted scenes.
