A Nigerian villager is eager to work as a civil servant for the British authorities, including a sympathetic district officer, in the hopes that it will benefit him in the future. Instead, his ambition leads to his tragic downfall. Mister Johnson, based on a 1939 novel by Joyce Cary, is a graceful, heartfelt drama about the limits of idealism, affectingly acted and handsomely shot.

Charmless characters on both sides of this pedantic anti-colonial propaganda film except for protagonist Johnson, who was doomed to martyrdom. No, thanks.
Well acted performances with an excellent cast and script. Beautiful scenery.
Great movie . . . interesting look at colonial Nigeria under Great Britain. Five Stars for Acting, Cinematography, Script, Sets and Characterizations.
this is a 1990 film made by the director of Driving Miss Daisy among other major films. I was looking forward to watching it but ended up FF through because there were no subtitles and the language was not clear. the listing says that there are subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing but there were none to be found on this Blu-ray disc.
sorry I missed it.
