if only Hollywood would remain true to the source of the film. hemingway has the killers being clip-lipped, not caring about their intended victim. that, I think rings true to the nature of hit-men, of hired killers, and lent the story, THE KILLERS, an aura of dread and godlessness which helped give it its impact. To be longer, the films dilute the truth as it was imagined and told by Hemingway. Too bad, not 'the real gen.'

Two films version the original which has all the early years of Burt Lancaster, Edward O'Brien, Ava Gardner. Lots of film noir effects; more skill with the actors portraying the roles..had to watch the ending twice to understand that Ava Gardner was the one that stole money and lived happily ever after till the hit man came to kill Burt and everything feel apart. Boxer turn bad by a manipulating female.

Later version is Ronald Reagan, Angie Dickenson, Lee Marvin; made the hitman the combers of the crime and at the end Lee Marvin gets the money but dies. Lots of sex poorer acting on the actors here. Racecar driver turn bad by a manipulating female.

Watch the earlier version first and then the later is recommended.

Ernest Hemingway wrote the book for this classic Black and White movie. So many stars you don't know who should get star billing. I am a Burt Lancaster fan, so he has me but good in "The Killers". Criterion Collection has distributed the film and they only pick historically classic movies from around the world. You can go wrong with "The Killers"!

I found none of the versions particularly interesting, though I liked the 1946 version a bit more. In that version, the film is mostly comprised of the backstory of the boxer; the story upon which its based is filmed and over with in about fifteen minutes, the rest of the film is the invention of the filmmakers. The best part was the inclusion of an audio recording of the story among the extras on disc one.

Classic film noir . The killers in the diner scene is one of the greatest ever filmed . Dark and doom ridden throughout ~ 420

Though the other comments say that this is the 1946 version despite the DVD cover, by the time I got it, it was the 1964 version! Disappointed that the BPL doesn't appear to have the classic.

At a glance, the boss could have been one of the killers threatened by the gorgeous mysterious woman's previous interest in the victim.

The DVD case said 1964 version, but the disc was the 1946 version. I can't compare them.

1946 Version. Film Noir at it's best, good story with contrasting black and white lighting.......awesome. Lancaster, Gardner & O'Brien are all top notch.

This is a great little film! The last scene makes you want to watch it again - classic!
