Since this is the eighth book in the series, this reader had to pay close attention to understand the various dynamics and storyline. Vampires take human servants and bend them to total subjugation. Most servants are fully trained before being assigned to their supernatural masters so that they know their place and obey without question. Lyssa’s loving relationship with her Jacob was more hard won and deeply strange, given that he’s been reincarnated to be with her no less than three times.

This book deals with shifting loyalties and politics. The vampire world is stagnating with very few births. Since there are only 5,000 vampires worldwide, this is a serious problem. But the main bulk of the book deals with Queen Lyssa’s attempts to deal with her Fae bloodline and the contempt of the Unseelie queen, Rhoswen, who has very personal reasons for hating Lyssa.

This is an additional complication to the plot and the author handles it with adequate deftness. But having missed a lot of previous plot I found myself baffled and, surprisingly, irritated with the sexual hijinks taking place. While I could accept it in another book as a way of cementing a mental and emotional bond among three people, an unusual vampire and his two servants, here the sex just kept getting tossed in willy nilly, derailing tense situations and turning them into something else.

Sex isn’t a magical cure-all for problems. Yet here, it seemed to be pulled out at almost every opportunity to show dominance, restore confidence, erase bad sexual experiences, negotiate future friendships or act as an apology. While I enjoy steamy literary sexual situations, having them tossed at me on practically every other page caused me to lose interest. It became a fight to finish this book, knowing that twosomes, threesomes, moresomes, orgies and bacchanalias were bound to happen.

Seriously, I found myself so bored; this book made me long for deep philosophical conversations. I guess there really is too much of a good thing.
