When Jewel's first album, Pieces of You, topped the charts in 1995, her emotional voice and vulnerable performance were groundbreaking. Drawing comparisons to Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell, a singer-songwriter of her kind had not emerged in decades. Now, with more than thirty million albums sold worldwide, Jewel tells the story of her life, and the lessons learned from her experience and her music. I could not put this book down. Jewel opens her heart entirely in this autobiography. Her story from childhood growing up on an Alaskan homestead, her many struggles through poverty and homelessness, and her beautiful music that saved her soul and how she moved into fame. Sometimes heartbreaking, but oh so inspirational. This is a book I would read more than once.

I've read a lot of autobios and memoirs but none, even remotely, like this one. Jewel is a unique person with a unique talent and has had a unique life. (My goodness -- who knew Sean Penn would show up in this book?!) It's hard to fathom she accomplished all that she did. Just the traveling alone stuns me. Read it and see for yourself.
