Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren't for the magic. When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake. Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate's guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta's magic circles. The Masters of the Dead, necromancers who can control vampires, and the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, blame each other for a series of bizarre killings--and the death of Kate's guardian may be part of the same mystery. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she's way out of her league--but she wouldn't have it any other way.

4 Stars - I recommend if you enjoy urban fantasy.

In post-apocalypse Atlanta magic comes in waves. One minute the magic is up, and technology doesn't work, and the next, the tech is up and magic doesn't work. This can make living in a dangerous world, even more dangerous. Kate Daniels has a target on her back because of the magic in her blood. She has spent her life in plain sight, trying to remain relatively out of sight. She is an investigator of magical crimes, and she's always got plenty to do. When she's approached by the Beast Lord, Curran, she'll work with the shifters to solve a common mystery.

Whew. First, I will say that it took me a while to get into this book. The world building is explained slowly, and I honestly don't felt like I understood the world until the second book. Note: there is an edition of this book with supporting materials in the back... which help you understand the world, I would recommend reading those first. You don't have to, but I bet it helps. Anyhow, once I got the world and magic a little more under my belt I started to enjoy the book more. I like Kate, she's surly and badass. I also liked all of the various other characters and her many connections in magical post-apocalyptic Atlanta. I am interested to learn more about world and the pack as I go. I also liked Curran, also a grump, so that's sure to be interesting, as I assume they will get together.

I enjoyed this book more as it went along and the plot and as Kate's character were developed.
I will read the next book of the series to see where it goes.

I love this book. It is a great start to a new series. The shapeshifters are amazing and I LOVE the amount of different type of shifters they have written. The vamps, oh boy, the vamps. ARE. NOT. THE. LVE INTEREST. TYPE. AND. I. COULDN’T. BE. HAPPIER. Go read this if you haven’t.

took me a long time to get into this series. I had checked it our and returned it many times unable to get past the first chapter. After reading the authors are series "Hidden Legacy" which I loved I decided to give this a try again. Boy am I glad I did. I loved this book and am now devouring the rest of the series.

I'd read an earlier edition of this and had to check this copy out for the bonus material, including a prequel story involving Saiman. Also really enjoyed Curran's POV and the other extras! Love this series and love Kate Daniels!

I don't read much fantasy but I love this series. A strong female character who does not need the man to save her.

I just read Curran POV, and made me want to read this series over again. Enjoying it just as much. Usually with a strong female lead the males tend to be bumbling messes, not the case here. They complement each other to get the job done. These books aren't oversexed like some series I can name.

Enjoyable, quick read, nice universe to take a break from the real world. Looking forward to seeing the relationships/people grow. I love that the main characters aren't all knowing, all powerful, they get bruised and battered in each fight thats it more realistic, more plausible. There aren't any "oh, come on are you serious moments" Great read!!

“Why a raven?"
"To honor my father."
"The writing under it, is that Cyrillic?"
"Yes."
"What does it say?"
"Dar Vorona. Gift of the Raven. I am my father's gift."
"The raven is holding a bloody sword."
"I never said it was a nice gift.”

Diplomacy was never my strong suit and my patience had run dry. I crouched and called out, "Here, kitty, kitty, kitty." Two golden eyes ignited at the opposite wall. A shape stirred within the darkness and rose, carrying the eyes up until they towered over me. This thing had to be at least five feet tall at the shoulder. The colossal cat circled me, half in light, half in shadow, the dark mane trembling as he moved. The lion vanished into a dark corner. A whisper of power pulsed through the room, tugging at my senses. "Kitty, kitty?" asked a level male voice. "What kind of woman greets the Beast Lord with 'here, kitty, kitty'?"
