This is a pretty good series with lots of wit and humor ... even though it is sometimes hard to follow given the speed of the dialogue and the social norms of the country. The lead character is charming, witty, intelligent, and caring. He's also sexy in the old fashioned sense of being burly with a hairy chest which is shown off at least once per episode. And it is nice that he goes against stereotype because he doesn't have a full head of hair. Unfortunately the first episodes are pretty sexist which is not all that surprising given the era and country the show is done in. There isn't a single professional woman with any power to be seen. At least some of the women are pretty sharp and not just semi dressed eye candy. [Yes, there is nudity.] Also, for those who care, the language can definitely get quite "colorful" at times. But all in all it is a fun show to watch.

Episode 10: Goldfinch and the Cat. I was surprised that I hadn’t seen this earlier Montalbano episode before. It was very well done and a nice surprise to see the female detective filling in for Mimi when he is getting married. Two interesting plots. Montalbano and his squad deliver another enjoyable performance. The Dectective Montalbano series is a favorite and I purchased all the books. I first started watching the TV episodes on public TV and loved seeing the humor. Its very fun how the author has incorporated Salvo’s love of food into many of the episodes and the books. I love viewing the fabulous Sicilian scenery especially the significant stone arcitecture and homes by the seaside.

Episode 1. The Snack Thief. Montalbano investigates the murder of a local businessman called Lapecora. Lapecora's widow suspects that he was killed by his lover Karima, a young Tunisian woman who mysteriously disappeared on the day of the murder. After succeeding in tracking down Karima's five-year-old son Francois, Montalbano realises that the case might be linked to that of a Tunisian man, also killed in mysterious circumstances on the same day that Lapecora died. Meanwhile, Montalbano's partner Livia, who has been entrusted with looking after Francois, becomes very attached to the young orphaned boy.
Episode 2. The Voice of the Violin. The naked dead body of a young woman is found in a villa outside Vigata. Montalbano discovers that she had recently bought the villa and was in the process of restoring it using her wealthy husband's money. When the case is taken from Montalbano and given to rival inspector Panzacchi from nearby Montelusa, Panzacchi draws some easy conclusions and the investigation risks going badly off course. Will a proud Montalbano stick his neck out to regain control of the case or will he allow his incompetent colleagues to pin the murder on the wrong suspect?

Episode 3. The Shape of Water. Mr Luparello, a renowned local engineer and leading political figure, is found dead in a car at a notorious prostitution spot on the outskirts of Vigata. The coroner rules that he died of a heart attack following an amorous encounter. Fending off pressure from prominent ecclesiastical figures who wish to keep the case under wraps and navigating the intricacies of local party politics, Montalbano goes about making sense of the available evidence, including the incongruous discovery of an expensive necklace found at the site of the murder.

I've watched this series in no particular order for many months now and despite occasional difficulty keeping up with the rapid-fire Sicilian-Italian it's wonderful to follow. I intend to watch the whole series in the library's collection since it's somewhat hard to find the discs anywhere else and if you buy the DVD version it'll cost you a bundle. Amazon and Netflix have some of them. MHZ is the distributor if you want to pay list price.
