directed by anthropologist, Robert Lemelson, who has been studying polygamy in Bali for many years, this doc covers a 7 year span in a family with 2 wives and a family with 5 wives.

the wives are held captive to these marriages due to the patrilineal laws of inheritance in Bali - in the case of a divorce they lose everything including their children.
this means that the 7 wives featured in this doc have survived being kidnapped into marriage, lied to about no other wives' in order' to get them into a marriage, are not financially supported by the husbands, and are frequently physically and psychologically abused by those husbands, who also have girlfriends on the side.

polygamy is a long-time entrenched way of life in Bali from the royal families on down to the villages, which makes it very difficult to make changes in Bali society.

a very interesting and informative documentary

A most interesting and occasionally poignant documentary on polygamy as practiced in Bali. The laws there especially favor the males, where marriage and divorce are concerned, and polygamy is legal, but the women certainly appear to get the short end of it.
Prof. David Barash of the University of Washington makes the case for polygamy being an evolutionary mainstay [in his book, Out of Eden], and it appears to work for at least one of the husbands featured - - all his many wives work and support their own children, but most of the wives appear frustrated or somewhat disgusted.
Thought provoking . . .
