"Weaving decades of field observations with exciting new discoveries about the brain, Carl Safina's landmark book offers an intimate view of animal behavior to challenge the fixed boundary between humans and nonhuman animals. In Beyond Words, readers travel to Amboseli National Park in the threatened landscape of Kenya and witness struggling elephant families work out how to survive poaching and drought, then to Yellowstone National Park to observe wolves sort out the aftermath of one pack's personal tragedy, and finally plunge into the astonishingly peaceful society of killer whales living in the crystalline waters of the Pacific Northwest. Beyond Words brings forth powerful and illuminating insight into the unique personalities of animals through extraordinary stories of animal joy, grief, jealousy, anger, and love. The similarity between human and nonhuman consciousness, self-awareness, and empathy calls us to re-evaluate how we interact with animals."-- Provided by publisher.

Safina combines good science, common sense, and the heart of a poet in one of the most important books I've read in recent years. Just wait until you get to the part about the elephant and the whale.

Re affirmed my belief that all creatures feel emotions. Some amazing stories! Only reason I didn't go with 5 stars, there was a lot of science, never was my strong suit, the stories were fabulous!

Changed the way I think about other animals.

The author presents very powerful evidence, through researchers' studies and personal field observations, that humans and animal communities share common empathies and emotional traits. The writing is both persuasive and poetic; the lessons present compelling arguments for how significant is is to change our views about dwindling populations and habitats. "We are kin, bee and bird of paradise- and great elephant- stardust all."
