This was my first Lisa Kleypas book and I couldn't be happier. I enjoyed this story so much and will be moving on to Marrying Winterborne as soon as I can. This is a typical first book in a series, setting up the intersecting story lines that will be focused on in future books. I don't think there was one character in this story that I didn't enjoy. I especially loved West, Pandora and Cassandra. They had some of the best and most humorous lines. I'm especially looking forward to their love stories. I've read where some reviewers state this isn't her best work. Well, since this is my first Kleypas book, I sense that I will be blown-away by some of her previous work. Bring it on!

I would also like to mention that I listened to the audiobook when I couldn't be reading the paperback and the narration was excellent. I'm a very picky audiobook listener and prefer to read rather than listen, but this book was a joy to listen to.

I have a slightly conflicted relationship with Lisa Kleypas' romances, because while I think they're technically very well-executed (and with lots of details about the changes in British society due to industrialization, etc. in the 1800s) I struggle with her characterizations at time. This was another case of an overbearing hero -- but I liked that the heroine was equally spunky, so I thought it worked in this case quite well. I also looooooved all the supporting characters, and enjoyed that Kleypas took her time in laying the groundwork for the rest of the series. My only real complaint is that the ending felt extremely rushed -- but this is a minor enough issue that I'm sure Kleypas' fans will enjoy this one nonetheless.

I actually enjoyed this one. I think she played it smart with having Devon leave to go back to London and recognize a stubborn woman who needs to have her wishes with respects to her idea of the mourning period accepted. A nice light read.

Usually look for her books, not sure what happened with this one. Could have choked the main female character in this one. She makes all the rules but doesn't have to follow them.
Should have been titled "Cold Hearted Shrew and the Rake"

An extremely misleading title for what is actually a rather lovely tale of growing to love land, and family, and purpose. There's far too little development of Kathleen and Devon's relationship for this reader, but I am most anxious for the follow-up book, featuring Kathleen's sister-in-law Helen and Devon's friend Rhys.
