Book Scavenger is a great middle school book. The story is about Emily and her eccentric family that moves repeatedly around the country in order to live in 50 homes in 50 different states. On their move to San Francisco, Emily meets James and finds a friend with the same interests in books and games as she has. Emily and James become involved in a game created by Garrison Griswold, the creator of a variety of games for book lovers around the country. This game, however, becomes deadly when Griswold is mugged and sent to the hospital on the way to revealing his new game. Emily and James stumble onto the game and find themselves trying to solve the puzzle at the same time they are being pursed by unknown assailants who want a book by Edgar Allen Poe called The Gold Bug. There are lots of twists and turns in this story and Emily learns a great deal about herself and her family. This is a wonderful book for middle grade readers as well as anybody who likes a good mystery, puzzle, or treasure hunt.

This book is a great read with a exciting plot. You'll love this book if you loved the Mr. Lemoncello series by Chris Grabenstein. You should definitly read this book and the rest of the series. P.S. Someone has to make that book hunt a real thing!

Book Scavenger is about a treasure hunt. James and Emily two kids in San Francisco find a hidden book called The Gold Bug. The Gold Bug has lots of typos. James and Emily find out that if you combine the typos together they spell a sentence. Very unusual! The sentence gives them lots of clues. Eventually they find a book with a letter. The letter says that whoever finds the book gets lots of money. They return the book to the owner who’s name is Mr.Griswold. Mr.Griswold is famous for setting up games. Mr.Griswold gives them the money. Read Book Scavenger to find out how James and Emily solve the clues to find the treasure!

Super cute. Even moments where I remembered what it felt like to read The Westing Game for the first time (which is high praise from me). For fans of Blue Balliett’s Chasing Vermeer series.

Jennifer Chambliss Bertman’s book, Book Scavenger was published in 2015. It’s a mystery book that takes place in modern San Francisco. Twelve-year-old Emily moves to San Francisco where her favorite book publisher Garrison Griswold lives. One day, Griswold gets shot, and Emily and her friend James discover a book that has lots of ciphers and puzzles Griswold left for them. They go on a puzzle solving adventure that leads to a valuable prize. They must go fast enough so that his attackers won’t get it first.
I think this book is a book worth reading, especially for puzzle solving readers. It’s one of those books that makes you want to keep reading. There’s a lot of suspense in the book, and it goes by very fast if you’re really into it. In my opinion, the author does a good job creating the tension between the characters, and that makes the reader interested in the book. Another thing, I find it such a nice book. I like how well the characters are developed, and they almost seem like real people. The author does a good job describing Emily and James, as well as other characters in the book. Throughout, the book the author makes it clear that Emily is stubborn, but she loves solving puzzles and books. The author wrote about Emily’s love for puzzles when she moved to San Francisco: “The city was hot only home to her dad’s literacy idol, but Emily’s too: “CEO of Bayside Press and mastermind of Book Scavenger. The coolest book hunting game in existence…. Book Scavenger was an amazing online community of people who loves books and puzzles and games as much as Emily did.” The author really does a good job bringing the characters to life!
Book Scavenger is an amazing book, and though I recommend it, I think kids ages nine and above would enjoy it more since kids at a younger age may think there’s too much going on. Again, I think this book is an amazing book. You should check it out!

Jennifer Chambliss Bertman’s novel Book Scavenger is a mystery book filled with adventures, history, friendship and more. Book Scavenger was published on June 2, 2015 and the story takes place in modern San Francisco. There is a twelve-year-old girl named Emily who is always moving from one place to another. Her parents are in a quest to eventually live in all 50 states. When she moves to San Francisco, she is overjoyed because it is where her favorite author Garrison Griswold lives. He is the one who created Book Scavenger, a game that involves hiding books, finding clues, and getting points for finding the book that someone hid. Along the way, Emily makes a really good friend, her neighbor James. He helps her with all the challenges/ciphers. But the trouble is Garrison Griswold has been shot, and a rare book, (The Gold Bug) of his has been lost/taken. Emily gets her hands on it, but she still has to crack the code before the thieves who attacked Griswold figure it out first.
Book Scavenger is a page turner that never stops. The two main characters are unlikely friends and they show some cool characteristics of friendship throughout, supporting each other at all costs but also getting into an argument for not supporting each other at the right time. The puzzles and the ciphers add a great piece of brain building for the reader that could help kids grow. The adventures can show readers how adventurous life can be.
Book Scavenger is a really good book. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves ciphers, puzzles, and adventures, but the gunshot scene at the beginning and the kids being chased by bad guys seems a little too much for younger kids. I give this book 4.5 stars because this book has a blending mix of entertaining characters, a perfect amount of suspense, puzzles and codes that will baffle readers, and everything else blended together in a perfect mystery novel. I could not put this book down. This is the best book I’ve ever read.

A fun read about friendship, books, and puzzles. Recommended for ages 9-11.
