It all starts with a school essay. Twelve-year-old Gratuity "Tip" Tucci is assigned to write five pages on "The True Meaning of Smekday" for the National Time Capsule contest, and she's not sure where to begin: when her mom started telling everyone about the messages aliens were sending through a mole on the back of her neck? Maybe on Christmas Eve, when huge, bizarre spaceships descended to Earth, and aliens--called the Boov--abducted her mother? Or when the Boov declared Earth a colony, renamed it "Smekland" (in honor of glorious Captain Smek), and forced all Americans to relocate to Florida via rocketpod? Gratuity's story is much, much bigger than the assignment. It involves her unlikely friendship with a renegade Boov mechanic named J.Lo, a futile journey south to find Gratuity's mother at the Happy Mouse Kingdom, a cross-country road trip in a hovercar called Slushious, and an outrageous plan to save Earth from yet another alien invasion.

Amazing in every way. An absolutely fantastic narrator reading an incredible book. I enjoyed every minute of it, and I still can't get little qups and phrases from the narrator out of my head. Let's see, so many things went right here...

Gratuity (her friends call her Tip), narrates in 1st person--a hard perspective to make sympathetic and likable, but Rex nails it in a character that is clever, loveable, and completely believable throughout some crazy situations. I can believe she's eleven: she doesn't always jump straight tot he right conclusions, her world is small, and her innocence comes through at every turn. Still, she's the hero of the story and not to be messed with. As a reader, I was in her corner the whole time, and I may even have been a little teary during a certain scene. The movie "Home" dropped the ball a little on adapting this.

The plot rolls along with good humor, great characters, and dirty, nasty alien villains. It's cohesive, well-written, and unforgettable. It has the, I think, possibly greatest description of grief ever (while the narrator still sounds like an eleven-year old kid). It's silly, fun, completely PG and has all the right ups and downs at all the right times. If you like audiobooks, this one is a can't miss. This is why Bahni Turpin is the best in the business.

The story is charming and quirky, and has enough bite that it would appeal to adults as well as children. But in the audio version, the star is truly the reader, Bahni Turpin, who you might recognize as an actress who has long been a standby on many popular television shows. Ms. Turpin's hilarious reading of "J-Lo" - the alien who befriends the narrator of the story and accompanies her on a road trip across America - is by far the best characterization in any audio book I've 'read.' And fair warning - if you listen to this performance with your kids, expect to hear them speaking in J-Lo's distinctive voice for months afterward. (You might even pick it up yourself.)

This is a fun, fun book! I listened to the audiobook version and the narrator, Bahni Turpin, was outstanding! Her reading of the character J.Lo was so creative that I didn't mind missing the drawings that are apparently part of the printed version. Highly recommended for all ages.

This book/Audio book is so good! A very well done and written story. It deals with many themes in a very hilarious way (if you're an adult). The audio book is voiced by a very entertaining actress whose voice is very nice to listen to. I recently found out that they made a movie of this book called "Home" which I actually watched. The movie is nothing like the book at all. I didn't even realize the two were the same after listen to the audio book. My wife was looking at kids movies on Netflix and read the name "Boov" in the description and put the two together.

Definitely read or listen to the book!

Adam Rex is an amazing author AND artist! I love basically everything he has done, but this one, Smekday... is a treasure. First off I commend him for tackling a female main character... not only tackling but creating one of the smartest most charming and honest feeling characters. The voice artist is wonderful in this audiobook but it's a must to also check out the physical book so you can follow along with the wonderful artwork. Keep em coming Adam and everyone else support this awesome Author/Artist!

This is hands-down one of THE best audio books we've ever listened to and that includes all the Jim Dale narrated Harry Potter books. Bahni Turpin is just amazing and absolutely pitch perfect for every character in this hilarious book. It's soon to be a new movie, "Home", and I'm sure my kids will want to go see it, but it will pale in comparison to this audio book. We all loved the narrator so much we went and looked for other audio books she narrated, regardless of genre or style. This is a very funny story and my kids have enjoyed reading it too, but I know they have Bahni Turpin's voice in their heads when they read. Just excellent all around! (March 2015)

Sooo, just an update, it's been 4 years since I wrote the above in March 2015. It's now March 2019, and my big ol' teenagers requested that I get this audiobook again for our Spring Break road trip! It is simply THE best. We still quote lines from it 4 yrs later. Highly, highly, highly recommend for elementary aged kids and beyond!

This is essentially a full-cast audiobook, read by one, incredibly talented voice actor. So very highly recommended!!!
