It was a culinary journey like no other: Over the course of 195 weeks, food writer and blogger Sasha Martin set out to cook--and eat--a meal from every country in the world. As cooking unlocked the memories of her rough-and-tumble childhood and the loss and heartbreak that came with it, Martin became more determined than ever to find peace and elevate her life through the prism of food and world cultures. From the tiny, makeshift kitchen of her eccentric, creative mother to a string of foster homes to the house from which she launches her own cooking adventure, Martin's heartfelt, brutally honest memoir reveals the power of cooking to bond, to empower, and to heal--and celebrates the simple truth that happiness is created from within."This beautifully written book is both poignant and uplifting. Not to mention delicious. It's an amazing family tale that reminds me of The Glass Castle, but with more food. And not just any food: We're talking cinnamon raison pizza."

No matter what paths we end up going down in life, whether ones we choose on our own or ones we are forced down by circumstance, certain things remain with us forever. Growing up in Boston with her brother and eccentric mother, Sasha had no idea how truly destitute the family really was, thanks to her mother's inventiveness in making things seem special, most notably in the kitchen. When the authorities come and deem their mother an unfit parent, Sasha and Michael are placed with family friends in another state, in what on the surface looks like will be a perfect situation, with everything that they could want or need. But ones sense of "family" runs deep, and the children soon find that the sense of perfection is a shallow illusion. Most notably, as events unfold and Sasha moves forward with her life, she slowly begins to realize the deep connection that she has to the kitchen, with the knowledge and emotional connection from her mother, and begins to find her way back. Well-written and thoughtful, with recipes interwoven into the stories.

Part cookbook, part memoir, Sasha Martin's Life from Scratch takes one woman's love of cooking and turns it into a meditation about familial absolution.

Interesting memoir about food blogger Sasha Martin, whose blog Global Table Adventure showcased a menu from each of the world's 195 countries. Wish there had been more focus on the cooking project, but a good read nonetheless.
