This book walks the line between humour and horror with the store layout being just like a haunted house.

The concept of this book is genius- the use of the IKEA-esque drawings at the start of each chapter, the meticulous attention to detail in the store itself- right off the bat, you are primed to laugh at this horror story/critique of late capitalism and its excesses. The problem is that the book never fully delivers on its promise. You never get a clear picture of antiheroine Amy, nor feel much empathy for her or her fellow Orsk employees, even after Amy decided to go back for her colleagues. The connection between the 19th century Panopticon and the modern-day wage slavery endured by the Orsk employees is never fully explored. I feel like the story was always teetering on the brink of great social commentary, but it always ended up sliding back into its admittedly fun, but limited gimmick.

A traditional (but fun) horror story in a unique, creative setting and format. I think it was a solid 3-star story with an extra star for the sheer creativity and quirk. While the plot was a bit thin in some places and spent entirely too much time on other pieces that didn't require that much development, I loved the author's overall attention to detail - complete with the physical book resembling an IKEA catalog. Definitely worth a read!

If you want to read an IKEA parody that is a humourous horror story, this is the book for you. The format of this book is similar to their catalog – the furniture, names, descriptions and pictures preceding every chapter were just as much fun as the story (I especially like the different colour choices). I was laughing before I even got to the first chapter. If you have ever worked in retail, you will enjoy the corporate speak and find the “just ORSK” sayings hilarious. I very much enjoyed this horror novel set in an IKEA imitation store. I had originally thought it was a horror comedy because of the fake furniture store catalog format but it ended up being satisfyingly grim and suspenseful.

Initially, I thought it was going to be a good scary story. It had some pretty good elements - suspense, characterization, true-to-life setting. Unfortunately, it became too far-fetched —-not that spooky stories generally lean towards realism, but Amy and the others went through too much trauma to be alive in the end. Yet, they seem to come out with some minor injuries that soon healed (except maybe emotionally).
The biggest plus of this book was the format. It is written in catalog form, and the products lend to the storyline and, metaphorically, take on the task of some of our actions.

I actually liked this book a lot more than I thought I was going to. It is written in kind of a fluffy style that makes you wonder if it's really going to be that scary. But as the story progresses, it gets creepy and makes you wonder what is going to happen next. I found it a satisfying read.

I picked it up for the same reason everyone else probably did: the Ikea-esque cover. What I got was a really good horror story. It's a fast paced, easy read, that's much better than you'd think.

Everyone's already done a bang-up job describing the sensibility. Gleefully wicked, esthetically pleasing to look at and handle...one of a kind. Retail therapy lol. I gave a copy to my son for Christmas, too.

It was exactly what I needed after some the serious stuff I’ve read lately. The opening had me going “YAY! Zombies!” and then giggling as I realized what kind of zombies they were talking about. Everything in Horrorstör was well-described, with the perfect amount of detail, with a sort of “Silent Hill” vibe. It unfolded in my head almost like a movie, and that’s the best kind of book. I loved the transitions, the characters, everything. I honestly can’t think of a single bad thing to say about this book!

The pace was fast and awesome. It runs from page one and doesn’t slow down until the end is wrapping up. The characters are believable. Seriously, with almost each character I found myself having this moment of recognition and being like “Oh god, its (insert acquaintance’s name)!” There were no annoying tropes or info dumps, so overall I can’t think of a single reason why you shouldn’t at least give Horrorstor a try.
