Staff Book Review: Yes, Please by Amy Poehler

As a huge fan of Parks & Recreation, I was excited for Poehler’s biography to hit the shelves. It took me two tries, and here is what I learned: Skip the book, and go straight to the sweet sounds of the author herself reading in your ears. This book was meant to be read out loud, by Amy herself. It is absolutely hilarious as an audiobook. (Submitted by Tamarack) (more)

I took this out cause I was going camping, and wanted something light to listen too....WOW. WHAT A FIND! Highly recommend the Audiobook, there's many cameo voices and tidbits that just wouldn't be as good in a book. I laughed out loud on the bus so many times....

You HAVE to do the audio book. She has so many guests. Amy is my girl and this book had me completely broken out in giggles the entire time.

I found this book to be thoughtful, hilarious, and inspiring. Poehler's take on motherhood especially was really beautiful and actually made me cry. Since everyone is comparing it to Tina Fey's book, I'll join in and say I preferred this one, though both are excellent. The audio version is SO awesome, especially if you're a fan of Poehler and other SNL alumni.

I thought Tina Fey’s Bossypants was funnier but also enjoyed this.

They say don't meet your heroes, but this proves that not to be a bad thing. A comedy heroine and my ultimate celebrity crush, Amy Poehler's memoir is evocative, thoughtful and most importantly hilarious. I listened to the audiobook but sure the any format makes this worthwhile.

If you like Amy Poehler and feeling empowered, this is the memoir for you. And it is definitely one that is vastly improved by the audio format.

You may know Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope from "Parks and Recreation", or from SNL's "Weekend Update". In her book she talks about her comedic improv beginnings on stage in elementary school, to creating "Parks and Recreation", and finally concluding with how technology is truly devious.

The audiobook is read by Poehler and features the voice talents of Carol Burnett, Kathleen Turner, Seth Meyers, Patrick Stewart, and more.

Amy Poehler does an amazing job embedding anecdotes of wisdom into her life stories. While I'm not rich and famous, Poehler writes with sincere honesty that makes her stories relatable and approachable. While I was mesmerized with some stories, I was surprised with how Poehler was able to put words to ways I've felt but couldn't express. This makes a reader like myself more responsive to the wisdom Poehler shares based on her life experiences. Honestly, after listening to this audiobook I took a hard look at my life and thought about the effort (or lack there of) that I've put forth. Her voice is one that I trust, not to tell me what to do but to ask me to be self reflective and make decisions for myself. Her experiences are of that as a woman who doesn't want to apologize for being a woman, and those stories have the ability to embolden and empower. This book makes me want to be a self-fulfilled woman, and I'm glad I invested the time in Poehler.

The main difference between this book and, say, Bossypants by Tina Fey is that you can tell that Tina Fey really *wanted* to write her tome. I love SNL, and pretty much any female that has ever graced that stage, but I failed to really connect with Amy here. I'd tried reading it before and couldnt get into it- so I took out the AudioBook and it was the same kind of deal. I just... it felt like I was listening to in-jokes with a bunch of people I didn't know (or care to know.) A real bummer, as I wanted to like it so so much

[Audiobook]

Amy Poehler’s memoir, "Yes, Please," falls short of what I had hoped for. She is charming and forthright and smart and witty. The stories about her time and growth at UCB and SNL and Parks and Rec are occasionally interesting, as are those about some of her other experiences. But the comedic and storytelling abilities she has shown in other formats didn’t translate into a book that shows them off. She’s just too rambling and disjointed here to make a whole, which would be fine if I just wanted to hang out with Poehler and hear her stories, but a memoir is more than that.

Amy Poehler, author, director, and jack-of-all trades in the world of comedy, narrates her memoir, Yes Please. Wildly funny, down-to-earth and to-the-point Amy shows all aspects of herself to her audience of readers and listeners. Yes Please is a finalist for the Prose Bowl. I liked this book and learned more about Amy who really is a new find for me.
