Raw, spare prose is the hallmark of Joe Clifford's Lamentation. He nails the culture of a small town, where old high school rivalries still impact relationships 20 years later and where there's clear division between those who "made it," those who could have made it but didn't and those who simply flamed out. Those elements provide a backdrop for a decent mystery that subtly explores the relationships between brothers, friends and lovers. It's gritty and sad - especially the depiction of how hard it is to achieve justice when you're homeless, destitute and drug addicted - but in many ways hopeful and redeeming, too.
