Over a decade ago, following a sharp rise in developmental disorders such as autism and ADHD, the mercury-containing preservative Thimerosal was widely believed to have been eliminated from vaccine supplies in the United States and abroad. However, dangerous quantities of Thimerosal continue to be used, posing a significant threat to public health and leading to a crisis of faith in vaccine safety. In this groundbreaking book, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., examines the research literature on Thimerosal and makes a very clear statement about its potentially dangerous effects. In the past, the CDC, FDA, NIH, and AAP, as well as the US Congress, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the US Department of Agriculture, the European Medicines Agency, and the California Environmental Protection Agency have expressed concerns over the use of Thimerosal in vaccines. But despite the many voices calling for action, the media and policy makers have repeatedly failed to adequately address the issue. Now, with Thimerosal: Let the Science Speak, the science supporting the elimination of this toxic chemical from the world's vaccine supplies, and its replacement with already available safer alternatives, is all in one place. Making this change should increase vaccination rates by restoring the trust of concerned parents in the vaccine program--a program that is so vitally important to public health.

The subject of vaccinations perhaps more so than any other in society – has an overwhelming polarizing effect. It’s quite unfortunate because there are a lot more than just two sides to the issue of vaccinations. In any case, as someone who is a great advocate of informed consent, this book resonates quite well with me. The reason is that although Big Pharma espouses that vaccines are safe, the evidence that has been accumulated by this author and countless other researchers over time indicates otherwise. That alone pulverizes the fantasy that most people are being informed of all potential data/issues by Doctors and the medical establishment. The author also makes a sound argument that changing vaccines to single-doses rather than using multi does would actually end in the elimination of the preservatives 2-PE and Thimerosal. Furthermore, as the author states, the cost-effectiveness of single dose vaccines compared to their counterparts , could also be superior. In conclusion, individual health should ultimately be the choice of the individuals and parents, and not something to be focred by the state. Whether or not people are for/against vaccinations, EVERYONE should be pro-education, and this book helps do just that – educate people about the many dangers of the neurotoxin Thimerosal.

Over twenty years ago after I ended my stint as a microbiologist with a global pharmaceutical company, I began to look into the subject of childhood immunizations. What shocked me most, was not that I discovered dangers that had been downplayed, but that when I called the CDC to discuss facts I was finding in the books on the shelf at the medical library (like the fact that early batches of polio vaccine had been contaminated with a cancer causing monkey virus (SV40) and this was spread to thousands of people, the CDC experts I spoke to were completely unaware of this fact. How can CDC experts claiming the benefits outweigh the risks be trusted to make such an assessment, when they are completely ignorant of some of the well-documented risks?
.
And yet in spite of my having learned about so many other risks of vaccines -- there was one that I completely dismissed -- the possibility that vaccines might cause autism in some children. I realize now, that like most other scientifically literate people, I had been successfully influenced to dismiss this possibility, without ever taking the time to have a look at the evidence.
.
This book is excellent, and so comprehensive. Kennedy has done an incredible public service -- and done it BRILLIANTLY in putting this book together. I am honestly embarrassed to admit, that I used to believe that there was no possible link between vaccines and autism. Kennedy brings together so many different lines of evidence here, that even if by chance half of what he says turned out to be misconstrued, what is left is still compelling. And it's logical We KNOW that methyl mercury (found in fish) is neurotoxic -- so why would we have expected in the absence of data (the case long ago) on ethyl mercury, that it would not be? Furthermore we now have data, and it suggests that ethyl mercury is cleared more quickly from the blood -- BECAUSE IT IS GOING into the organs more readily than methyl mercury.
.
He also covers the myriad conflicts of interest, epidemiological studies, how the media has been censoring ANYTHING that contradicts the perspective of the big moneyed interests and so much more.
.
History suggests that ego, economics and greed CAN and DO derail the truth -- but not forever. Eventually science is self correcting, and does overcome bias and special interest. It is only a matter of time, before it will be common knowledge in the scientific community that vaccines have played a role in the epidemic of autism.

As a thesis, the book presents a strong one. Even I would argue that mercury should be taken out of everything - not just vaccines. In fact I was surprised to learn that Thimerosal (which contains trace amounts of mercury) was taken out of every vaccine except for the most common one - the flu vax.

But this book reads like a conspiracy indictment. It does make clear that "correlation does not mean causation" but it asks why it is that rates of autism and other developmental disorders have skyrocketed as more parents have complied with vaccine schedules.

The Wakefield study (on which the anti-vax campaign is based) was properly discredited as well as it should have been. Now we have the potential of another wave based on the "Kennedy study" - even though RFK Jr says at the front of the book his six children are all vaccinated.

One point I would agree on is why is it Big Pharma makes mercury-free vaccines for the developed world, but mercury-based vaccines for the developing world. What's up with that?

Two other points - the subtitle is way too long for a mainstream book. It'd be more appropriate for a peer-reviewed article in a medical journal. And, as much as I like Bill Maher, when one of your biggest boosters is a talk show host who's against any kind of vaccination, your credibility is bound to take a notch or two down.

Kennedy has done a lot of fine work, for the environment, as well as helping poor families in the Northeast keep the heat on during the winter with cut-rate oil. This book is not one of his finest moments.
