"When a vagrant--the Walking Man--finds a dog wandering alone with a scrap of paper with the words "HELP US" attached to its collar, he's sure it's a desperate plea from someone in trouble and calls on Detective Inspector Jack Caffery to investigate. Caffery is reluctant to get involved--until the Walking Man promises new information regarding the childhood abduction of Caffery's brother in exchange for the detective's help tracking down the dog's owners. Caffery has no idea who or what he is searching for, but one thing he is sure of: it's a race against time. Meanwhile a wealthy local family is fighting for their lives, held hostage in their remote home. As their ordeal becomes increasingly bizarre and humiliating, the family begins to wonder: Is this really a random crime?" --Publisher.

Great book, even if we don't see much of Caffery. The plot is well structured and held my attention till the last page. Can more can be said? 5/5.

Only one word comes to mind to describe this book.....Brilliant!! One has to read the previous books in the series to fully understand the scenario.

Not your usual run-of-the-mill detective mystery, and it helps if you have read the previous books in the series. The books are not standalone in that regard as there are a couple of story threads that run through the series so far. Maybe with this book's ending, any future McCaffery series will be standalone (preferred).

An interesting concept, just couldn't pull it off. Needs a good editor. Some of the the torture scenes were sickening rather than scary. Creepy idea, good writing, though.

Mo Hayder continues to show her excellence and uniqueness in this book. There is the Hayder intensity, suspense, and good storyline. Although the focus is upon those most readers would deem as the antagonist, she tips her hand early(for her) as to who the real killer is. The emphasis on McCaffery's issues, and the walking man are also finally resolved.

The outcome on this one was predictable and ironical enough for Mo to bow out of the Caffery series at this point if she wants to.Little or no hope left. Depressing. The descriptions were excellent and the air of menace well sustained.

Easily guessed the ending early in the book but will give Hayder points for making the English countryside truly menacing and familial situations sinister. Wolf is overly complicated and long. Small mercy -- no Flea Marley in this one.
