A regular moving day turns into a battle of wits and wills. You'll love the hero and root for him.

Stanley and Rose Peke are downsizing; moving from New York to
California. They've raised their kids, have lovely grand children
and are ready to downsize. When the movers show up a day early, everything
changes. Nick and his team pick only the elderly for their favorite scam;
nobody ever realizes they've been had until Stanley. This incident
has set off emotional wells both men thought long closed. Nick and Stanley
conduct a showdown in Middle America and they don't really care who
gets hurt along the way. This book moves rapidly toward a thrilling
conclusion and ultimate showdown between these two survivors who share a
winner takes all mentality.

This book gripped me from the beginning. Having just completed an international move, I could identify with the organization and stress that Stanley was experiencing; and the possibility that something might have been missed. Stanley regards his belongings as things but they are his things, collected over the years and with memories attached. He doesn't want the insurance payment he wants what he had. As he and his wife start their drive across country to their retirement home, his childhood memories and experiences are unfolded for the reader, knowledge to which his wife has never been privy. His childhood in Poland, during the war shaped who he was to become. I enjoyed this book up to the last several chapters - when it became somewhat darker.

"Stanley Peke and his wife have become the latest victims of a scam on the elderly. Planning to relocate from New England to California, their movers show up a day early, pack up all their belongings, and hit the road... only to have the real movers show up on the appointed day. Though everything is insured, Stanley refuses to let this go; with help from others, he tracks their stuff down and steals it back. But the scammer isn't any more willing to take that lying down than Stanley had been. With a lot more introspection and a slower pace than most thrillers, Moving Day will best suit fans of character-driven tales like those by Laura Lippman."
