Contemporary R & B bears very little resemblance to the vintage kind exemplified by Aretha Franklin or Sam Cooke. There's the more experimental, indie-friendly, minimalist soul of singers like Frank Ocean (possibly the best of the new breed), Miguel, fka twigs, and The Weeknd. Then there are more self-consciously retro artists like Adele, Raphael Saadiq, Sharon Jones, and Leon Bridges. Aloe Blacc falls firmly in the second camp, although he uses trendy producers like Pharrell and DJ Khalil. He was a warm, inviting voice that's a bit like Bill Withers and the positivity is infectious, but it doesn't really break any new ground. There's an acoustic version of "Wake Me Up," which got some radio play when it was done by Avicci and Blacc.
